Quote:
“I’m gonna say it, man. I wasn’t happy the last three or four years in Chicago,” Hester said during the postgame show on NFL Network’s Total Access. “Things weren’t going the way I expected. I would always have a great camp; have all the receivers saying and all the coaches saying I had the best camp out of all the receivers. And then, once the season starts off, I’m not there.”

“I’ve got a quarterback now that ... he loves even the walk-ons,” Hester said, “and coaches that know how to get the ball to me; how to make plays for me. I’m excited for this season, man. This is only the beginning for our team. It’s a team that knows how to utilize their talent. Everybody’s making plays, and we’ve got a team that, if you’re good at running this route, we don’t care if you’ve been a starter for 12 years. If this guy is two years in the league and he’s good at this route, we’re gonna let him run this route.”

Although he left Chicago he brought da fire an da pashun to Atlanta.

Looks like I was way too early in declaring his career almost over. I think I did it like 3 years ago.

It is somewhat troublesome they couldn't find a use for him but it is very troublesome that they were unable to find even a league average replacement.

I thought he was done and Falcons were dopes for paying him. During Hard Knocks seeing what a dummy meathead their special teams coach was I definitely thought he was done.

But I guess when you pair him with a offensive genius like Dirk Koetter, a QB that isn't a Caller Bob and a replacement level ST coach he can be alright.

Let us not overlook the fact that Lovie punted to him and he returned it for a TD to break the return record last night.

Lovie looked pissed when Hester broke that one.

Hester will be good for at least one return TD when the Falcons play the Bears next month.

It's interesting that the offensive GENIUS Marc Trestman couldn't find a use for Hester.

No shit. I think Cutler hated him and Trestman didn't want to push it.

He is the #5 receiver in Atlanta. They basically use him for returns and gimmick plays. Pretty much the same as the Bears. He has just been more effective, so far. Their special teams is better than the Bears, but he still can't catch a deep ball.

Good for him breaking the record, but he is still just a kick returner (though the best there ever was). The Bears had to get rid of him because of what his contract was. And of course Cutler hated him -- Cutler needs to throw to big targets with good hands like Marshall because he has bad accuracy and poor reads. He's not going to throw to some midget receiver running bad routes with no hands.

Let's not re-write history here. Hester was given plenty of chances offensively and not only with Cutler. He was playing WR before Cutler got here. He had some decent games and put together some OK seasons. He just isnt that great of a WR and Cutler was sick of throwing to short fast guys that couldnt run routes. Add in the fact that he wasnt the explosive return man and there was no money to spare to pay for past production.

Based on his quotes from last night, it sounds like he wasnt the explosive return guy anymore because he was being a bitch about not getting reps as a WR.

I appreciate his time here and he gave a lot of good memories. If he was a good WR he would still be here.

My favorite Hester memory as WR was when Muhsin Muhammad had to help him line up on the line of srcimmage and basically tell him what to do.

My favorite memory was that awesome one handed touchdown grab down in Dallas.

Agree 100%. The last couple of years, he was running more sideline to sideline on his returns anyway.

My favorite memory is him hurdling Todd Sauerbraun on his way to the end zone.

Yeah, I meant favorite WR memory... That was a good one because Sauerbraun was talking shit about going after Hester and punting right to him. Whoops!

Yeah he had a couple of good games in Dallas as a WR. I think on Monday Night he had a TD too, yeah? The game where the Bears were trailing by a lot late and Brian Greise hit him on a long bomb was awesome too.

Very well said.

I loved Hester and was thrilled to see him do that last night.

Good for Hester. I wish he had broken the record here but regardless he deserved to have this moment in his career.

That said, the part where he said that all the coaches and receivers said he had the best camp kinda bothers me. Everyone knows, and knew at the time, that all that shit was just people pumping his tires so that Devin would be confident when he went out on the field. It's not like he wasn't put on the damn field to play, he was the number 1 receiver and he played like shit in that spot.

Let's not re-write the facts here. Cutler needs tall receivers because he's wildly inaccurate. Hester may be a mediocre receiver, but Cutler is most assuredly a mediocre quarterback. And every one of his career stats show it.

Take that axe and grind it somewhere else

I wasnt saying Cutler was Peyton Manning, I was just saying that Hester not succeeding as a WR isnt because of Jay Cutler. I doubt you would find any NFL QBs that say they dont want big, tall, strong receivers that can get up and get the ball. Any QB in the league would love to have Brandon and Alshon over Hester.

This statement bugs me a bit too. How in the world does that relate to him? Because the let him run the 2 routes he can actually remember?

There was a deep pass thrown to hester last night in the endzone, sure the pass could have been better, but a bigger WR catches it. Show me the highlight reel of him going up and catching passes?

Loved the guy when he was here, but $4M for a returner, just doesnt work.

can we call Atlanta when Devin does that run backwards thing and loses 10 yards.

Will root for the guy all the way to the HOF, but it was time to go. Him being on turf doesnt hurt either.

And Yes, the guy is HOF....I assume somewhere there is a stat of how many times he was the returner and the Bears started at the 40 or better, due to his return or poor kicks away from him.

The most electrifying return man I ever witnessed.

The Bears feared losing Hester when it came to re-signing after his first contract, they paid him beyond his true role as a return man and to maintain NFL/NFLPA salary structure they declared him a receiver. His impact as a return man is far beyond what you see on TV, and too many only appreciate the touchdowns as opposed to the field position he provides and impact upon the opponent's kicking game. Funny how former coaches (Rivera, Smith) didn't learn and decided to kick to him. Hester didn't want to leave the Bears but Emery's negotiating style (go out, see what you can get) opened the door for him to leave, the lack of a counter-offer let him go.

When the Bears play Atlanta, watch to see if the rookie punter either shanks one out of bounds or booms one to Hester that he returns.
