You gotta wonder how salty the attitudes are at Halas Hall lately - especially this week.

Every major sports media outlet in the city is talking/writing about baseball... in December!

This is a great week for Chicago baseball - no matter which team you root for.

I am a Sox fan, but I have an increasingly strange outlook on the team. Even though they won it all in 2005, I find it difficult to believe that they will attain any level of success in the next 5 years.

Are you a racquetball player, DannyB? Something you mentioned in one of your posts made me think you used to be a member at the now-defunct Edens Athletic Club. I used to play there all the time. It was a great place and a throwback to a much earlier era. I actually met the great photographer Art Shay there and had many interesting conversations with him about Nelson Algren and Chicago history/culture.

Yeah I used to play there in the late 90's-early 2000's or so. I remember Shay holding court in the locker room all the time. Seems like there was a big contingency of cops from that district at Milwaukee & Foster. They used to sit around going over their parlay cards. Now I try to get in a couple of leagues a year at the Y in Glen Ellyn.

You mean an era when people actually played racquetball?

I think it's possible we are acquaintances in real life.

I played at the Edens in the early 2000s. I loved the crowd there and missed the place for a long time after it closed.

I've played in a few tournaments out in Glen Ellyn.

For me, the Illinois racquetball scene went seriously downhill when Dave Negrete closed his club in Bloomingdale. Great group of guys there, too. Things are a little livelier out here in New England, where I now live.

I mean an era when gyms were as much social centers as they were places to exercise. The isolating quality of today's fitness factories--Bally's, Planet Fitness, etc--is pretty depressing.

So I would have been late 20's up to about 30 at the time. Most of the guys were older. I typically played in B leagues and A leagues. I often won the B leagues but couldn't really hang in the A leagues. That place had a great scene--you could show up just to work out and pick up a game instead. Plus it was a great cross-section of people from drywallers living around the corner to doctors on their way back up to Wilmette or something. And the girl who ran the desk might be the nicest person on earth. Didn't TCA buy it and then some former employees try to buy it back after it went downhill?

Tall Midget: were you the one who told the Todd Sauerbrun racquetball story here years ago? That was probably the funniest damn thing I've ever read from the board.

JORR's "Hey guys, Joe just blackwatered a fucking Indian" story would be a close second.

Yeah, I was the one who posted that story about Sauerbrun. If you thought it was funny reading it, you should've seen it. Unbelievable. Everybody in the gallery was turning red as a result of restraining their laughter. Nobody wanted to openly disrespect Todd because, quite frankly, he's a pretty scary guy when he erupts in a fit of 'roid rage.

Sadly, this is what they do with racquetballs these days: "It was modeled after Gulf War veteran and engineer Steve Bollinger’s own infertility hack—he split a racquetball in two, ejaculated into half and inserted it into his wife’s vagina. The couple conceived two kids this way."

Wow! I'm glad the Bears could push baseball out of the headlines for a couple days by firing their GM and coaching staff and leaking rumors about how they are going to implement the "Cubs model" of separate presidents for business and football.

Coaches are getting fired and the playoffs are starting.

Baseball has no business being the top headline right now, BRick. They'll have their time to shine in a few weeks.

So you are suggesting that the amount of media attention given to a particular sport reflects its popularity?

Baseball always has business being in the top headlines. Interest levels demand it. Black Monday is a one day break from it, as it is every year. Tomorrow, the latest Nick Swisher trade rumors will get ESPN.com front page billing, as it deserves.

Baseball is the only sport that draws interest 365 days of the year. With good reason. There is always something going on, whether it is the season. playoffs, winter meetings, fall league, hot stove off-season, draft, international signings, showcases, etc. Teams can make big moves on any day.

The NFL off-season is mostly dormant, and there is only so much analysis one can have during the week between playoff games. NFL has a lot of downtime. Short season leads to a very long off-season.

Yeah, this is way off. Everything you said about baseball applies to football. And I'm on Team Baseball.... but I don't really care how popular or not it is perceived to be.
