I bought an LG when we needed a new one, just figured out the size, then looked at all of them side-by-side and picked what I thought had the best picture. Might have just had the best color settings, I don't know.

Guy at the store then told me there are only like two manufacturers of screens for the tvs, Sony and LG I think, everyone else bought from them. Could have been total BS.

This could be true. Or BS. I would like to know facts. Electronic shit is way outsourced and that is why you see the way below market stuff like Menards sells on black friday. The Silly Putty 50 inch for $99. You get what you pay for as a rule but every now and then a gem comes along.

Used to be that way with VCRs and stuff. Sony and either Samsung or Panasonic made everything and it went into different packaging.

Sony actually made both and slapped a either or tag on it . Samsung high end and Panasonic low end. This was in the mid to late 90's. Panasonic was a trusted brand in the 60's and early 70's. I had several Panasonic radios growing up and all worked well. My Grandfather was a TV repairman for Zenith in the 50's and 60's in Pittsburgh Pa. He loved Zenith lots cause they kept him busy. Quality goes in before the name goes on my ass is what he would always say

Like all electronics industries, the TV industry is very incestuous. While many of the no name cheap TVs are made by others, some contain the same quality and technology of the name brand equivalent and some dont. The name brand TV manufacturers mostly hard spec higher quality components that cant be substituted, while the cheapie no name TVs sometime soft or open spec their components so they can be substituted by cheaper and lower quality parts. Regarding the flat panel manufacturers, I believe there were only a few Plasma glass screen manufactures, Pioneer, Panasonic, LG, Samsung and maybe 1 or 2 more. I'm pretty sure that every plasma TV manufacturer has exited the plasma business. There are more than 25 companies who make LCD & LED screens.
I still dont understand the attraction to curved TV screens.

$50 isn't worth dealing with the hassle of a TV going out and getting the free replacement and setting it up.

Stay away from the half assed no name brands and stick with Samsung or Vizio.

Bought a Samsung in December, and already have had the screen replaced twice. Pain in the ass.

Yup. With phones too.

Though Apple makes a quality product for more money and a feature set about a year later than the ones above.
