ok...looks like the A/C not working. Unit powers up...I hear it trying to kick in, but the fan, not spinning.

Darkside...if you're interested, you get the first nod for the call. I'll PM details.

Spray some WD-40 on the shaft of the fan motor, and try to spin the blade manually with something long and thin, like a screwdriver. Then try to fire it back up.

I'm sure Darkside would tell him the same thing, before he drove a long way.

Winner!
A/C is working.

I'm sure this unit will die sometime, but for today...it's working. When it does die, Darko will get the call.

Good deal. Simple solutions first.

Next time you are outside, with the AC off, take your garden hose at a 45 degree angle, and spray the coils of the condenser. Cottonwood seeds, and other air borne objects can clog the coils. This will help your compressor breathe, and live longer. If it still looks dirty, you can spray the coils with some Simple Green, and spray again.

And change the filter often!

Chances are good that condenser fan motor is at end of life though. You probably get a few more weeks out of it but it's close to the end.
What's the make and model?

Darko and I have been chatting. I'm running for now, but certainly can agree this thing will die sometime soon. I'm going to hope to make it into mid-July and then we'll get him out there for some A/C lovin

That was one of the more dramatic changes I've seen from a simple condenser cleaning...
Chus you'd appreciate... it's a 22 system, head pressure around 295, 2 to 4 degrees subcooling... I'm pretty sure theres other issues like minor noncondensibles and a possible liquid line or metering obstruction but when I just took the top off and ran the hose thru the condenser the head pressure dropped to around 195... still low on subcooling... 1.5 lbs or so added and I got around 10 subcooling at about 210 psi and suction line around 65 psi and 13 superheated.
Clean your condensers people.

And it sounds better too. The fan and the compressor were struggling against the airflow and head pressure respective.

I did a furnace and AC change out two years ago. Last summer, I get a call that the AC isn't working. They had just finished doing a ton of construction. His asshole carpenter just decided that he didn't need two of his returns, and blocked them off. He hadn't changed his filter in months, and the condenser coil was full of grass, leaves, and weeds. The pressure on the high side was through the roof.

But, when it wasn't working properly, his wife wants to blame me. This is why I have done any equipment jobs since. You need some duct work run, I'm your guy. You need a new furnace or AC, call somebody else, I don't need the headache.

My AC and furnace are both 23 years old. I know I should just replace both before they break down in either August or January. Was quoted $10K for the furnace alone.

These AC/furnace/Heat pump threads have been really helpful in reminding me to get my unit serviced (hey-o!). $75 for cleaning and peace of mind. Thanks everybody!

Christ man. I mean, some are expensive... like a Carrier Infinity multi stage deal but that's an insane amount of money for a furnace if it doesn't make you coffee and give you a blow job.

It is rare here too - lots of oil heat and coal (surprise!) here. When we built our house we had them install a high efficiency heat pump but we also have a propane fireplace. But highly efficient (heat costs us about $75-100 a month from Dec-Feb). I also think it helps that while I do live in weirdsville, it is in a valley and typically doesn't get too cold here, unless it is an arctic blast the winter average temp hovers around 40.

I can't believe people still use oil heat man. It fucking stinks, it's dangerous. I can't imagine having a couple hundred gallons of highly flammable material in or around my home. Nuts. Bloody east coast weirdos!
