I contend that my generation of fathers are the best this country has ever seen.

I'm sure there are statistics that people will think say otherwise, but I see a great deal of involved, loving fathers that would put some of the previous generations fathers to shame. Something seems to have clicked.

I get to fish in the morning before the in-laws come by. I might even fish in Montgomery and crash Killer V's soccer party.

I would join you, but I literally don't know any soccer terms.

This is my typical Father's Day. Minus the altered brew. I kind of grumble about it now to the point that I get to spend it st home every other year now. Although last year the old man gave me a nice o/u shotgun so I guess I got that going for me.

I should add it was one he owned and gave to me as he can't hunt anymore and knows I enjoy it. Dude is not going out to buy me one. I mean he loves his daughter and tolerates me but that would be an overly extravagant gift. But I am the father of his only grand boys so I kind of see it as entrusted to me to give to them when they are ready.

I started it off taking my father in law to breakfast. I do like the guy but, as I have described previously, he is the ultimate schnurr. He sits down at 10 am breakfast. My wife and MIL order a bloody mary and he says "well, its my day so I'm ordering a whiskey". Fuck off with your early morning whiskey that you never would have ordered on your own dime. Meanwhile, it's my day as well and I'm drinking water.

I coached a baseball game, which seems like a perfect father's day experience to me. There is something idyllic in pitching batting practice in the hot sun to kids who are just beginning to put into practice the lessons you teach. We lost but my son hit a bomb so all in all it was pretty good.

Finished with a party at my brother's house. My mom catered in superdawg because my dad loves it. Good shit. My wife made home made ice cream sandwiches, which are so simple but so fantastic as the desert on a hot day.

I got Cubs tickets from "the kids". Going to be the first Cubs game that my son will actually remember. It's not until August so hopefully we will be seeing a first place team well over .500 by that point

Took the kids to Great America yesterday...my 2 year old loves it. My 10 month old could give a shit as long as I was shoveling puffs into her mouth.

I got to schlep out to Algonquin and grill burgers for the family and install Net Nanny on my demented 94-year-old-dad's computer. Per mom's instructions.

My sister is one of the crazy dog people that considers them pseudo-children. She recognizes that it is insane and laughs about it with us, so it is tolerable.

Raising a kid is 100 times harder than raising a dog, but I find that many of the same principles apply:

- Always maintain alpha status; if kid/dog is getting too comfortable, make sure to let them know who's in charge
- Never look away first during eye contact
- They eat last
- Reinforce positive behaviors; correct negative behaviors
- Kid should learn to pee/poop in yard in case of emergency
- Any whining should be ignored and not rewarded

My wife thought crap like that was cute years ago and actually once bought me a card from our then (little) dog.

Then she realized that I once fired a vet for adding my last name to my dog's on cutesy checkup reminder cards.
