I am the exact Coho Lips demographic and I assure you, "Disco Sucks" was not an anti-gay or anti-black/Latino movement.

Dahl was pissed because he lost his job. Chicago middle and working class kids who liked rock were annoyed because their girlfriends were dragging them to dance clubs.

All this latter day analysis is reading something in that wasn't there.

Opinions vary. It certainly had the anti-Black/Latin/gay feeling on the south side. Still does. Which makes the annual House Music night at the park odd.

I've enjoyed watching that fat tub of goo fail at virtually turn over the last 30 years. And rooted hard for Howard Stern to finish him off.

White people like Lady Gaga and Beyonce, too. I myself happen to love the '90s descendants of disco. But disco was not a province of straight-white-male culture the same way, I dunno, Styx was.

The reaction against disco--and the insistence on returning to the aesthetic and underlying values of "classic" rock--represented a refusal to accept shifting definitions of gender roles in a rapidly changing society.

Mostly DD had to do with Dahl's immense popularity. Parkins or Speigel having a White Sox themed night wouldn't draw flies. Steve and Gary broke all the rules, and didn't care who liked it. Howard Stern regularly would steal bits from S & G. Dahl couldn't transfer his act to tv, and attempts mostly bombed like Johnny B. Sterns WOR tv show was a classic. Dahl now is unlistenable, partnered with talentless slugs. Stern show is a far cry from it's past, but has it's moments.

Stern always cried the exact opposite, especially when he first came to Chicago. It's laughable how both thought people gave a damn. But as dicey and overt as Howard could get, I could never imagine Robin working with Dahl.

Who knew disco was considered the product of disenfranchised groups. It's almost always portrayed as a materialistic white person phenomenon with John Travolta being the icon.

This new critique of the event is just ad post hoc disingenuity from unknown writers trying to make a name for themselves with a novel take. You see this in literary criticism all the time. It's practically encouraged in university English programs.

It worked. They guy who wrote the Vox piece will be on with Mac and Parkins at 4:00.

The only people that listen to the radio now are old farts who wouldn't dare venture out to Guaranteed Rate field.

Disco sucks and any cocksucker complaining about commemorating Disco Demolition Night deserves to be tossed from the top of the 500 level

I'm gonna say 99% of those who ever wore a black Loop t-shirt never heard of Frankie Knuckles and have no idea what house music is even to this day, let alone in 1979.

You think he did? I really doubt that. He hadn't even been in Chicago very long at the time.

After Mac made his points the author said it was not his intent to paint everyone there as a racist homophobe. However, he never said that in his article. He did say, though, among other daming things:

While Dahl has vehemently denied it as merely a harmless stunt, its execution was racist and homophobic.

Dahl, for his part, will tell you that there was nothing racist or homophobic about a bunch of white people burning records by artists from marginalized communities, no sir.

He backpedaled when confronted with valid points and made concessions he never mentioned in his article.
