My great aunt had conditions that left her confined to a nearby nursing home from before when I was born. I'd go visit her with my mother and great grandmother for years and later go pick her up for family events and the smell of the place always made me think of loneliness, misery and death.

Helped a friend’s mother clean out her Mom’s room at a place after she passed. I.. yeah.. no thanks. When friends grandfather was in it shortly before there was a guy there who had dementia and would constantly sketch up screaming “get me out of here” over and over. Think I agree with my wife’s great uncle who told his wife that if she ever saw him unconscious outside to go back inside, make a pot of coffee and drink it before you call the paramedics.

I was in one for a will signing. The client was so far out of it we didn't let it happen. Even worse was her roommate who just kept saying "help me, somebody help me" over and over again.

I had a few great grandparents in homes. Every time I would visit they would wish they were dead and beg for us to kill them. Most people go to these places to die. Looking back on it they would have welcomed the virus and done everything they could do to catch it. What a depressing period in my life. Alcohol really helped deal with that much like it is helping today.

When my mom was getting near the end she was losing it mentally and she knew it. That has to be scary. I was realizing she could no longer live alone and I was trying to figure out what to do. I know now that I let her live alone too long. Thank God nothing really bad happened. These are tough decisions and it's hard to know how to deal with the situation you've never encountered before. She was very concerned about going into a home. As soon as I told her I was going to move in and stay with her she completely relaxed. The morphine probably didn't hurt though. I'm glad and kind of proud I took care of her myself. And lucky I was able to. My wife helped a lot too.

That was great of you to do. I wish we could afford to move my Mom in here and hire an at home aid to stay with her during the day. The good thing is she really likes the staff at her nursing home and they like her also. She turned 90 on the 19th and she said "I can't believe I'm this old".

The only grandmother I knew suffered from pretty severe dementia before she died. I think my aunt and dad told her a half dozen times that her husband had passed but she didn’t remember and kept asking. Eventually she came to the conclusion that the Indians probably killed him since he had been sent out west to deal with them. Not sure where that came from. Apparently she was lucid one day and her old self and the passed over night. I can’t imagine feeling it coming as you know she had to.

I think many of those places will let you kill your parent/spouse if you want, at least if they’re on morphine. The nurses at the place I had a great uncle at would not only tell you the recommended dosage, but tell you to be “careful” because if you gave them exactly “x” amount it would be fatal, but also painless and nobody would know.

I was really careful in following the directions/timing with the morphine. I was surprised that they were as loose as they were though. I got a refill one time and nobody checked anything. I remember things being a lot tighter in my dad's hospice care.

Another thing about this is that it's really important to make what you want very clear to your family members/caretakers. Both of my parents were really different when it came to end-of-life issues. My dad was dying of cancer and weighed about 85 pounds and he would have done anything to live another day.

When my mom was not doing well, she had a doctor appointment and it was almost impossible to get her dressed. When I finally did, she was complaining and almost refusing to go. So I took her back upstairs and went to her appointment by myself to talk to the doctor. I asked him what we should do. He said, "Well, you know she is completely uncooperative when I put her in the hospital for tests. There are so many things wrong and without tests it's hard to know how to best treat her." I asked, "What do we do?" He suggested hospice. That kind of took me by surprise. I asked if she was that close to dying. The doctor said, "Who can really say about something like that? She has a lot of things wrong with her. I'm not supposed to recommend hospice unless the prognosis is for six months or less..." Then he asked me if I thought she had six months. I hadn't really come to terms with that, but we both agreed that it probably wasn't likely.

Then he said to me, "In some cases you have to wonder about whether it's the patient who doesn't want treatment or if it's family members pushing that. Your mother has been my patient for a long time and I'm well aware of what she wants. I can't even tell you how many times I've heard her say how she doesn't want anyone trying to keep her alive." We both kind of laughed about it because that was my mom.

Yeah. My mom stayed very close to us when she went into a very small nursing home with about five residents in it. They were very nice and professional. I liked the fact that she had her own private room and could take her meals in her room if she wanted to which didn't happen very much, though. I was fairly expensive but it was clean and safe. Someone in the family saw her at lest twice a week. She was almost 100 when she passed away with my oldest son and myself with her at the end.

I feel I haven't the right to end a life. Even my own. Hopefully, that mindset changes. Having alzheimers or Lou Gehrig or Parkinsons scares the piss out of me. And what about a stroke? You can't plan for that.

Kind of the same deal with my Mom. She won't get a cat scan so there's no way to know what's going on upstairs. I don't blame her.

What I've suspected for years. My sister would not let the hospice nurse administer the morphine to my dad.

My mom got sepsis and told my dad she wanted to talk privately and told him, " I love you but I'm tired and I'm done. I'll be gone in two weeks or less"

And she died peacefully at home.

Yeah, "I hope I die before I get old" sounds great...until you get old...and then you don't want to leave. You've got kids. You've got grand kids. You've got Bears' games to watch.

It's easy to say fuck the elderly...when you're young and a douchebag.

Like your father, I want every second I can get, but I don't want to live after losing my memory or not being able to do basic things for myself.

I know even if you make things clear, you can have a selfish family member who doesn't want you to go. I was that selfish man with my grandmother. I would look her in her eyes and tell her to "Keep fighting!"
Alzheimer's had made her a shell of herself, but it was as if she could sense my pain, she would ALWAYS say "Okay, Nas." When I was finally made peace because I saw she was suffering and said my thank yous and goodbye, she died a couple of days later. That was never lost on me.

That's why if I feel the mental slippage or have some condition that's worsening, I don't want anyone in my family to spend a significant amount of time providing care. Especially when I am too prideful to want it and confident that I will be abused in a home.

  I started typing my name. Besides, I put her douche bag in my mouth as a small child, that was the least she could do.

My friend Mike, who you've met a few times, is about ten years older than I am. His mom had Alzheimer's and lasted a long time. He and his brother took care of her. He was telling me how that experience really changed his outlook. He said he used to be afraid of dying, but now he's more afraid of living.

Mike has a way of turning a phrase. When he was a kid he worked as a stockboy in a Chicago Heights grocery store. He always says that was his favorite job he ever had. After college he worked for the IRS for a little bit but one day he was put in charge of seizing a guy's liquor store and he quit the next day. He had a long career as an executive but the company closed and he has bounced around a little since then. He's been working at Amazon for the insurance until his Medicare kicks in. He likes to say, "When I was a young man I took items from a box and put them on a shelf. Now I'm an old man and I take items from a shelf and put them in a box."
