Is K.C. Johnson the only realistic alternative to Bernstein?

There are other sports talkers--like Silvy, for instance--who launch withering critiques of our teams without embarrassing themselves.

Bernstein went with the story as a strategy for drawing attention to his show, not necessarily to "do his job" as a sports commentator.

Isn't his job to draw attention to his show?

That touches on the whole problem with bernstein. He's an "entertainer" when it suits him, yet he wants to be respected as a "real journalist".

The Penn St stuff was certainly the opposite of entertainment.

Right. Don't get angry if people fail to find you credible when you ride a story harder than Bob Greene rode Baby Richard while your partner makes weird noises and diddling jokes.

Sure. But then that's a tacit admission that his audience should trust nothing that he says. RPB seems to have a much different conception of Bernstein's role in the media landscape, and I was distinguishing between our views. But I think that point was pretty obvious.

Its not either of the Dan's jobs to protect Patrick Sharp's family from Patrick Sharp

No he wouldn't/isn't right. It's what makes him an asshole.

The guy is media. He is supposed to comment on local sports stories.

Being media means coming off like an asshole sometimes

What would you have him do? Protect the players by holding the story? At that point he becomes PR for the team, not media

And, again, Sharp is the bad guy here (in this hypothetical where these things are proven true)

It wasn't a story, though. Bernstein made it one by commenting on rumors that have yet to be substantiated.

Look, Patrick Sharp is probably a bad guy. But obviously so is Bernstein.

Yeah, it seems like Sharp wouldn't focus his efforts on the equipment manager's wife--unless he's into taboo sex.

As a proponent of neoliberal ideology, Bernstein has made a career out of elevating humiliation to a form of entertainment. His forays into the Penn State scandal exemplified this dynamic, although not perfectly so in that his comments typically focused on embarrassing the powerful rather than the powerless.

Well, I thought the story was out there and Bernstein just shined a spotlight on it

And when he does there is no compassion to the victims in the story. That's never his focus, it doesn't occur to him. He's an asshole. Sharp maybe one but it doesn't excuse or make Bernstein's asshattedness okay. It's in the way he treats his callers, news subjects, coworkers, everything.

Bernstein didn't make Sharp's or anyone else's life difficult; Sharp made his own life difficult by being a philandering mutt, and apparently a sloppy one at that.

In a league where seemingly everyone's playing for the off-ice high score at 'put the biscuit in the basket', apparently ol' Patty Sharp did it enough, and with no small amount of aplomb, that enough people who've seen and heard it all took notice of Sharp sowing his organic oats and now the time to reap said oats is at hand.

I understood Readers point but I don't agree.

I don't think it is Bernstein's job to worry about the people that Sharp embarrassed with his alleged behavior especially those who were sleeping with a married man.

I feel sorry for his wife though. Hopefully she divorces him.

So, Bernstein should have not mentioned anything then?

Ok. Sharp is still the jackass. And if it wasnt Bernstein, it was gonna be Sports Mockery or someone else.

Also, where did Bernstein get this latest thing?

Is it the latest rehash of a year old story?

I was late to the details of this story but I thought that something happened recently that brought up the events of last year. The equipment guy thing maybe?

I don't know, RPB, no ones knows what anyone is talking about, where anything took place, when anything took place, what took place and who exactly was involved.

Whenever anyone backs the BernSTINE on here on this subject it's always "Well, Sharp PROBABLY did that so he's right!" or "Sharp MOST LIKELY did that so he's no wrong!" With no proof or sources to back it anything up. Kinda like what BernSTINE is doing, no sources, just running with some old junk to try and catch a shine. Good thing the Duke Non-Story came along.

BernSTINE is a coward.

Don't be a BernSTINE

I guess you could make the case it's irresponsible of Bernstein, but if it comes out that Sharp did some of these things, then the fault should go on Sharp. Especially when talking about his family

Giangreco didn't get fired when he made some shitty speculation about Payton and forced him to hold a news conference about why he was dying.
