Galena is complete trash. Driving back and forth to college in Dubuque I loathed driving through there. Bullshit "antique" shops and rat poison wine tasting/shops, it's nothing but junk for tourists. Spend the extra 15 minutes and go to East Dubuque and hang out at the strip clubs, they're better than anything Galena can offer.

Cook Meth?

haha, a lot of meth up in that area, at least in the sticks surrounding the relatively small town of Traverse City (maybe 10K perma residents, ~15k during the summer?) . And heroin. Kinda like Vermont.

Tourism is the answer. It's all seasonal. Mostly Summer seasonal. a bit of skiing in the surrounding areas.

Michael Moore moved up there and started a film festival (late July/early August) and a comedy festival (last month).

Renowned rotund person Mario Batali also has a place up in that area.

Health care (retirees) is likely the #1 source of decent jobs (besides teachers and various public employees).

A lot of vineyards and microbrews up there. Short's is taking off as the best of the microbrews from that area. Taking 3rd behind Bell's and Founder's among Michigan microbrews (in terms of success).

Right Brain Brewery and the Filling Station are both must visit microbreweries if you make it up there. Neither bottle or distribute much, so far. Maybe growlers to go only.

Left Foot winery(?) makes excellent rieslings. I think the entire area is know for their whites/rieslings.

Speaking of the whites of Traverse City, a spoof tourism ad:

Entirely possible to have a wife and kids stashed up in Traverse City and still have a job/run a biz back in Chicago. Flights are pricey ($200+ one way). But thanks to the time change thing and Michigan's rather generous / lax interpretation of speed limits, driving up there on a Thursday night, working remote or whatever Friday and then jumping in the car @ 5 am Michigan time Monday morning and making it back to an office in downtown Chicago by 10 Monday AM is doable.

I've been to Lake Geneva a handful of times and it seems to be your typical resort type town. I only did the touristy shopping / walk around
up the main drag one time and it was relatively painless. I've spent most of my time golfing while there. Hawks View, all the courses at
Geneva National, and a couple seasons ago was able to get out at BigFoot CC which was a treat. Never done the courses at Grand Geneva
yet.

I have never played down there, that is something we should look into. That may take into account a day of hooky from the office.

I'm open to it. There are a number of courses in that area. I can keep my eyes and ears peeled for any potential deals.

That is why I am saying during the week, it has to be better than playing on a weekend. Also, if we are taking a day off, I am looking at 36.

Something bad happened to you in Galena, what was it? What painful memory are you trying to suppress?

Lauderdale Lakes is where it's at...

and Lake Geneva is 78.7 miles from Wrigley Field. Not a chance that takes 1 hour on a Friday post noon.

Can it be 1:05? or do we need exacts for everything around here? because I am 100% sure I can do 1:30 with a Brat Stop STOP for Pepperoni stick, beer and curds, probably a piss and maybe a rootbeer for the 24 miles to the Grand. Done it at least 50 times.

You could get to Lake Geneva in just over an hour if you gun it on the Tri-State and tempt fate on Highway 50.

Right. But it might take you an hour to get to the Tri State (or 94 at Lake Cook) from Wrigleyville.

I wouldn't go too far over the speed limit from Kenosha to LG with Illinois plates, that's for sure.

But if you're in Round Lake Beach, you're not going east to the Tri-State and then swinging back west from Kenosha (unless you are), you're puttering up 12 or 83, which can really slow you down (though never so much as Lake Zurich, where I swear that stretch of Rand has been under construction for THIRTEEN FUCKING YEARS).

Rand road thru lake Zurich was last under construction in 2008 as far as I can recall.

You must drive slow. I would say I go to Lake geneva no less than 10 times a year and probably more depending on Summer schedule, this summer I expect to be there a ton...come over and say HI

They've definitely done work on it since then, and when they're not, it still bottlenecks and takes forever to get through there.

Doug does not drive slow.
He once wanted me to hit triple digits on the Edens.

I drive as fast as the road and traffic allows.

I'll let ya know next time I'm in the area.

I hit triple digits in Praire View, got a ticket for 97 MPH when I was 17, with 12 cases of beer from the Brat Stop. Cop asked if I wanted to pay the ticket now, said I only had a $100 (we were loaded to go buy beer) he said 'That'll do'...took it and walked away....ticket never showed up on any record ever....funny how that happens,

He's right, there's never cops on the Edens. At least not parked somewhere looking for speeders. But, if you're going north hit the breaks before you get to Lake Cook cause sometimes Highland Park will put a cop on the NB entrance ramp.

as long as your not leading or tailing the pack, you are usually good. On long drives I'll hook up with 3 or 4 vehicles and everyone trades the lead every 5-10 miles or so. happens all the time.

I agree and employ this strategy all the time wherever I'm driving--Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, etc.
