I was looking for a Larz thread to bump, since we don't have an omnibus "Larz is the inner ass of Chicago media" thread. This'll do, especially because it's about WCGO.

Get a load of this exchange:

So you tuned in to an AM radio station, knowing that most AM radio stations have brokered and specialty shows on weekends, listened to just a few minutes of two such shows, and figured that was enough to make a blanket statement condemning the entire station?

As to a couple of your remarks: There are no stockholders. The station is privately owned, and is operated by a different company, which is also privately owned. (One of the shows you complained about is hosted/produced by one of the owners.) WCGO-AM has been profitable for some time now, as well.

"Smart Talk" is a slogan they have been using for about a year to describe their weekday afternoon programming (which will soon be changing to something live and local... and presumably, smart). I guess "smart talk" on weekdays doesn't translate to "smart listeners" on weekends, though. Certainly not on message boards, at any rate...

Um, Larzie, the dude pretty much caught them running programming from the wrong week. That's generally frowned upon at any news station, especially one that markets itself as "smart." So basically what Larz is saying is "so what if they ran expired news content? It's a weekend radio show! It happens! They're not dumb, you are!" I don't know how he squares being an attack dog for any radio station that is fairly criticized with the love of the medium needed to run a message board about it. Any real fan of radio would say "they ran a news show a week late? That's shit."

This guy sucks.

IIRC the Score reran one of Hub's canned 7am Saturday(?) morning shows either in week 16/17 or in the first round of the playoffs. I thought I was missing something, then I figured: "who cares?".

Sunday morning, I think. They don't run the Mike Francesa Sunday show anymore, do they?

But yeah, predicting an election that happened four days ago does not reflect well on the station. Lo and behold, Larz just posted a press release from WCGO about picking up the NASCAR rights.
