By Jena McGregor,

Over the past two weeks, with one act of humility after another, Pope Francis has proven he’s willing to break with tradition.

Just after being named the new pontiff, he asked the faithful to pray for him, rather than the other way around. He’s refused to stand on the customary platform above other archbishops and dressed himself in simpler vestments than his predecessors. He’s made a practice of shunning the rich trappings of the position, from paying his own hotel bill to opting out of the palatial apartment popes have lived in for a century in favor of simpler digs.

Is it more effective to reward employees for taking a screening, or to penalize them if they don't?

Many of these acts send a signal about who Jorge Mario Bergoglio is and what reforms he thinks the Catholic Church’s leadership needs to make. He’s making a point of continuing the humble lifestyle he lived in Argentina (where he was known to take the subway and fly coach) and showing how the Church’s bureaucracy has become too wrapped in clerical privilege.

But an act of Pope Francis’s on Thursday perhaps says the most about his humility. Taking part in a tradition of Christianity’s holy week that reenacts the humble gesture Jesus made toward his 12 disciples before the Last Supper, Francis washed the feet of 12 people. What was unusual, however, was that he did not wash the feet of priests or even lay men, as have his predecessors, and he did not do it within the hallowed walls of a Roman basilica. Rather, he washed the feet of 12 juvenile prisoners at the Casal del Marmo Penitentiary Institute for Minors. Two of the young people were women and one was a Muslim, marking the first time a pope had included either group in the ceremony.

The move to kiss the feet of women has some religious experts expecting controversy, saying the pope’s action could “set a questionable example.” Meanwhile, those who hope it’s a sign that he will consider ordaining women as priests may be disappointed. The Associated Press reports that in his 2011 book, he voiced support for the theological underpinnings of excluding women from the priesthood.

Still, the pope’s latest convention-busting move at the very least shows an interest in greater inclusivity. It reveals Francis to be a leader who is not merely humble, but courageously willing to reach beyond the Church in new ways. Thursday’s breach of established ritual may have been his most significant break from tradition so far. My guess is it won’t be his last.

It's interesting that he chose to perform mass on Holy Thursday at a jail. Fitting for a man who's patron (St. Francis) was jailed for a year in his youth and had to be buried in a cemetary for criminals. He explained that they could not come to him, so he came to them. This is truely a very different Pope.

Francis gets personal: 'I didn't want to be pope'

By NICOLE WINFIELD

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Pope Francis revealed Friday that he never wanted to be pope and joked that he's living in the Vatican hotel for his "psychiatric" health.

Francis showed a personal and spontaneous side as he met with thousands of children from Jesuit schools across Italy and Albania. Tossing aside his prepared remarks, Francis surprised the kids by asking them if they'd like to ask him some questions instead.

"Yes!" they shouted to cheers and applause - and the concern of teachers who fretted that no one had prepared anything.

Answering their questions one by one, Francis told them the decision to become a priest had been difficult and that he had suffered "moments of interior darkness" when "you feel dry, without interior joy."

But he said he went ahead because he loved Christ.

One of the most touching moments came when Teresa, a bright-eyed redhead no more than six, asked Francis flat out if he had wanted to be pope.

Francis joked that only someone who hated himself would ever want to be pope. But then he became serious: "I didn't want to be pope."

Someone else asked him why he had renounced the papal apartments in the Apostolic Palace in favor of his spare suite in the Vatican hotel.

It wasn't so much a question of luxury as personality, he said. "I need to live among people," he said. "If I was living alone, isolated, it wouldn't be good for me. A professor asked me the same question, `Why don't you go and live there (in the papal apartments)'? And I replied: `Listen to me professor, it is for psychiatric reasons,'" he said chuckling.

Francis has shown himself to be remarkably comfortable around children, taking up to an hour each Wednesday to greet mostly young people in the crowds at his general audience: He caresses and kisses the dozens of babies handed to him by his bodyguards; and he tousles the hair of older teens and pats them on the back, asking them to pray for him.

He showed a similar ease on Friday as he engaged in a good 30 minutes of banter with the schoolchildren, casually making the points he has made in his homilies and speeches: about the "scandal" of poverty and how the world frets when the stock market dips but cares nothing when a homeless person dies, and how everyone should learn a lesson from the poor.

Pope Benedict XVI would occasionally take questions from young people, but the questions were always submitted in advance so he could prepare a response.

The questions on Friday were clearly spontaneous. One little boy from Sicily asked Francis if he had ever visited Sicily. (No, Francis said, but he recently saw a beautiful film about the island.) A teacher from Spain asked the pope about "compromised" politicians. (Francis said all Christians had an obligation to be involved in politics.)

His final message to the kid was upbeat: "Don't let anyone rob you of hope."

RIO DE JANEIRO — Pope Francis waded into the heart of Brazil's troubles Thursday, telling residents of a notorious slum that their leaders must do a better job of helping them.

The potentially provocative comments by the first pope from the Americas were in keeping with the causes he holds most dear: social justice and reaching out to the poor.

"No one can remain insensitive to the inequalities that persist in the world!" Francis told a rain-soaked crowd in the Varginha favela, or slum, which had been spruced up with new electrical cables and fresh asphalt. Yet ruins of shanty-type housing hulked a few yards away, and drug traffickers' graffiti kept reappearing under the noses of military police.

Public authorities, the pope said to enthusiastic applause, and "those in possession of greater resources" must "never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity!"

It was the most political message yet in the pope's pilgrimage to Brazil, and for many it echoed the enormous protests that erupted last month among Brazilians angry over government corruption, excessive state spending on upcoming international sports events, and lack of basic services such as education and healthcare.

Venturing into the favela was probably the trickiest event in the pope's week in Brazil, his first overseas trip since his election in March — one that has brought him back to his native continent.

Security, already frayed by Francis' tendency to ignore restrictive rules, and logistics were complicated. The recently paved streets in the favela are narrow; large parts of the slum are essentially in ruins; and the crowds, while perhaps admiring of the pope, are unpredictable.

But the visit appeared to go off without major hitches.

Varginha, a slum so poor and violent that it's sometimes referred to as the Gaza Strip, has benefited from small improvements aimed at stanching social unrest. But the pope seemed to be saying that such government efforts were not enough.

The most humble, he said, can offer the world a lesson in solidarity.

"Here, as in the whole of Brazil, there are many young people.... You have a particular sensitivity toward injustice, but you are often disappointed by facts that speak of corruption on the part of people who put their own interests before the common good," the pope said at a refurbished soccer field, speaking accented but perfectly understandable Portuguese.

"To you and to all, I repeat: Never yield to discouragement, do not lose trust, do not allow your hope to be extinguished. Situations can change, people can change."

Francis traveled to Varginha, on Rio de Janeiro's northern edge, in a relatively modest silver sedan, not a limo, seated in the back and with the window rolled down. He then transferred to an open-sided popemobile from which he waved at followers swarming the vehicle and kissed the occasional baby hoisted in his direction.

Government sharpshooters lined the route.

Thousands of residents and visiting pilgrims waited in cold, steady rain for the pope's arrival. Earlier in the day, he received the keys to the city and blessed some of Brazil's potential Olympic athletes; later, he met with young people from his native Argentina, then presided over a celebration for World Youth Day, the official reason he is here.

"We were a little worried how this would go, but it was better than we could have imagined," said Varginha resident Rosane Paulino dos Santos, a wedding florist and church volunteer. "How can we explain a blessing like this? … He knows how to speak to the young, and with the less fortunate."

As a priest in his native Buenos Aires, the former Jorge Mario Bergoglio relied on his Jesuit-shaped faith to minister to the impoverished slums of the Argentine capital. At his election, he said the Roman Catholic Church should be "a poor church for the poor."

Many Varginha residents seemed grateful for anyone to shine a light on their plight.

"He's bringing hope to the community, especially the children, and showing them that you can get through anything with faith and goodwill," said Suely Ribeiro, 58, an education worker.

"This is really important for us. He's a representative of humility and caring and, most importantly, true peace, which is something we need here," said Milena de Souza, 26, an office assistant. "Because of all the violence we've had here, hopefully the pope can bless us."

Pope Francis plans to drive used car around Vatican City by himself
The pontiff has shunned Pope Benedict's BMWs and Mercedes cars for a used 1984 Renault that he plans to drive himself. The car is a donation from the Rev. Renzo Zocco, who used it to serve the poor in Verona.

Pope Francis’ plans to drive around Vatican City in a 1984 Renault 4 have his security guards in a tizzy.
The sweet wheels have already logged 190,000 miles on the road. It’s a second hand gift from a northern Italian priest who used the car to visit his poor parishioners, Famiglia Cristiana reports.
RELATED: POPE FRANCIS DEMANDS STATUE OF HIMSELF BE REMOVED
The 70-year-old priest, Rev. Renzo Zocco from Verona, sent Pope Francis some fan mail earlier this year, pledging his support and offering up his car. In true Francis fashion, the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics called Zocco’s cell phone in August for a quick chat.
At first, Francis was reluctant to accept the gift, thinking that it should be given to the poor. But Zocco reassured him that the car would serve as a testimony to the work that the priest had done in the working-class neighborhoods of Verona. Plus, he already had a replacement.
Zocco and about 100 of his parishioners from the church of Santa Lucia di Pescantina piled into a bus and headed for Rome. The pilgrims rolled up to the Vatican on Saturday with the 25-year-old car on a tow truck.

He is reportedly willing to consider ending the celibacy requirement for priests, as well. Says that requirement is more about discipline than faith.

Seacrest with some BREAKING NEWS for the Catholicly illiterate. Who, Where, When, How, wha?

Sarcasm aside, I was not aware of this fact. Under what circumstances can a Catholic priest marry? Are they still considered a Catholic priest? Or are you referring to priests that were practicing and then chose to walk away from being an acting priest and get married?

Exceptions are made on a case by case basis for priests who convert from other churches to Catholicism.
