Not a lot of wiggle room there.
In fairness, living in the city = smaller yard.

So, it's basically the same amount of hatred.

You didn't say it outright. You used "code words".

I live in the suburbs, and there are many people of color in my neighborhood.

Exactly. It's 70-30 in the church I normally attend.

I'm sure the churches in Sauganash and Edgebrook are the same though.

Which church? I would bet the QAS parish is pretty near those lines depending on how you define people of color as their is a significant Philipino population.

Of course, you know in advance that OP is an atypical suburb.

I don't live in OP anymore, but if you add Phillipinos , then white people are the minority in my parish.

When people say a "better neighborhood" what do you think that means?

Better schools, less crime, nicer houses.

I had friends who moved from the city to the suburbs to get to a "better neighborhood". They weren't white though. They were smart to get out of more dangerous neighborhoods and schools to safer neighborhoods and schools.

Well, of course it's a class and money issue. But are you really going to suggest that class and race are not linked inextricably in the United States?

As good dolphin pointed out the very existence of suburbs is a reaction to city living.

The numbers obviously indicate there is a deep economic divide in our country but I think it's fairly insulting to think because someone chooses to live in an area with less crime or better schools they are looking to run away from minorities. If you can afford it, you are going to move to a safer neighborhood either in the city or outside of it regardless of what race you are. It's the smart decision. People in the city do it all the time too.

It goes both ways now. Cities have adjusted based on the benefits of the suburbs too.

I agree that race might not be top of mind for many when fleeing a "bad neighborhood", but that is the cause and result nonetheless. I'm not judging people. I understand someone trying to do "better" for themselves and their family. But when the middle class abandons a "changing" neighborhood, the result is going to be worse schools and less services. It's a vicious cycle.

It is. The cities aren't really helping with this though as most modern construction I see in Chicago(and New York) seem to be focusing on still keeping the more well off separate from the less well off except at train stations and parks.

The funny thing is, and I'm not saying it is typical, but if the neighborhood I grew up in is "changing" it is because of the Eastern European immigrants children that seemingly aren't interested in a "better life" and instead seem to be exporting whatever trouble they had in previous places they lived.

 I've been learning Ukrainian and Russian over the past six years. I'm definitely a minority in my neighborhood as a person whose first language is English.

Traditionally, whatever group of immigrants has come to the U.S. has made its mark in criminal endeavors as its members struggled to get a toehold in the new world. The following generations have moved into legitimate business and by the third generation most are attending university.

So the question arises, why is it so difficult for black Americans to take those next steps? Obviously, slavery is a huge legacy. And there is evidence to suggest that it isn't skin color that is holding people back. For example, Nigerians make up less than 1% of the black population in the U.S., but Nigerians make up 25% of the blacks at Harvard Business.

Here is an interesting article on the possible cause:

Same here. Oddly though, isn't Chicago regularly listed as the most segregated city in the U.S.?

Pretty much. And the majority of the suburbs follow the same unfortunate pattern.

My neighborhood has all of the shades of the race color wheel. I would suggest that the 44 acre parcel that our association is in is equally, if not more diverse by population equivalent than many Chicago neighborhoods.

I enjoy being able to walk to any of 50 places to eat in a couple of minutes, or walk to a major street and grab a cab, to go home, or out.

Last time I tried to get a suburban cab was at the Scores 20th anniversary show and I waited about 2 hours!

Waited so long, the bar closed and I was waiting outside and grabbed all the Score banners to take home! Yes, they are probably still in a storage unit.

right and thats why I live in the city. I enjoy thus freedom. Every other weekend, the freedom is limited.

But have plenty of friends that live in the city for similar reasons and many friends who would live in the city of they thought they could afford it.

Its expensive to live in the city. I dont fault anyone for being in the burbs,.

I'd like to see how that breaks down in terms of property taxes, sales tax, etc...
Sales tax in Lake County is 7%. Cook County varies from 8% - 10.75%.

Suburban neighbors seem to be more distant than those that live in the city. I think you get more house for your dollar in the suburbs but just about everything else cost more.

What costs more?

Property taxes are lower, gas is cheaper, food is cheaper, utilities are typically cheaper as the homes are newer and more efficient (overall).

I guess it depends on where you stay in the suburbs and city but I've paid more for property taxes in the suburbs than in the city. Trash and water cost more. Utilities are virtually a wash or more expensive because the suburban house will be bigger. The cost of gas is cheaper but we're only talking about $.20 a gallon in most cases.

$0.20 a gallon times 10-15 gallons times however many tanks per week you need can add up to $200+ extra per year really damn fast.

How much is water/trash in the city? I pay about $80 every 3 months.

You can't just add up expenses like that. What is a good school worth to you? Might be $10,000/year to somebody or nothing to somebody else. Maybe you use the library, $500, year. Maybe somebody never sets foot in a library.

It's all about location. If the argument is you're moving from a bad neighborhood to a nice area in the suburbs then you're going to pay more in taxes.
