I avoided doing (overly) stupid shit because my dad would literally kick the shit out of me. He's over 70 now and I'm pretty sure he could still kick my ass. He's a monster. Dude has arms like fucking popeye.

Dad spanked me once (can't remember what I did)...after that, if I started to get out of line, he just had to give me that look and I promptly quit fucking around and made sure my ass was glued to the nearest wall or chair I could find.

I was the same way. I did have a couple friends who would get their ass kicked for doing dumb things and it had no effect on them. There is no one size fits all way to get kids to do the right thing. Dealing with kids 10-18 everyday some you can talk to when they do something bad and they will stop. Others need something taken away (recess,playing time etc) others need a phone call home and some just need the threat of the phone call home. Its about finding what motivates them to do the right things.

I can't recall ever hitting my son except maybe when he was tiny and on a diapered bottom like stay away from that camp fire. I have a look with him though that he knows not to cross. It helps that coaching him and rough housing through the years I have shown him enough special moves that mean you are puddy in my hands should I choose to kill you immediately.

When my then 16 year old son took a swipe at my wife I took him down in a headlock and put his ass on the floor. He told the school next day and I had to go through all the bullshit. Nothing came of it but it is all a bunch of shit. School, cops, state agencies. Mess of shit.

Late to school and looking disheveled. They asked what was going on. He told them we had an incident. They had to report to state and on and on and on.

My son would have not made it to school a couple days until the black eye was gone.

MAYBE part of the reason that kid felt enough anger, hatred and despair to participate in the riots is that his mom has been kicking his ass his whole life.
