I don't see why it should matter. If we discovered tomorrow that homosexuality was completely a choice, as activists argued for a long time to prevent medicalization of homosexuality, I'd still support gay marriage. And I support polygamy too assuming that there's no coercion.

It's only a red herring because gay rights supporters don't like the idea of icky Mormons having several wives. They have their own bigotries as well. They are just more socially acceptable.

Much of Europe is already moving towards polygamy to accommodate Muslims. I imagine things will play out similarly here. Once again, I'm for SSM and polygamy. Lets just not pretend the one case is obvious and the other isn't.

Whether outdated or not, when polygamy is mentioned, Mormonism is the first thing that pops to mind for the vast majority of people. That will change over the next decade, partly because it is outdated. And the groups that actually practice polygamy are much more sympathetic characters than Mormons to the types of people who work at, say, Newsweek.


Once the gay marriage war is finished and the SSM side has won (I side, once again, that I am on), it won't matter. The next battle will be fought on its own pitch. And when it is, the arguments presented by those who are pro-polygamy will be largely the same.

This isn't science fiction. Europeans are fighting these battles right now. Polygamy is already tacitly "recognized" in many European nations for welfare purposes. Why would America be different?
