Congratulations to Belgium's and team BMC rider Greg Van Avermaet for capturing not only the stage win but also securing his first Tour de France yellow jersey in a stirring performance on yesterday's stage 5. Van Avermaet was allowed to lead an early breakaway of 9 riders that reached an astounding 15 minutes ahead of the peleton, and was easily able to outlast the other riders and secure the win by nearly 3 minutes over Thomas De Gendt and over 5 minutes from the peleton containing the top contenders for this years tour. While Van Avermaet is not considered a threat to the overall GC contenders of this years tour, this win on an atypically early mountain stage could keep him in yellow for quite some time, until they reach the high mountain passes and mountain top finishes of the Pyrenees. It is unlikely any of the lead teams will expend much energy trying to track him down.

American Tejay Van Garderen continues to impress, finishing with the main pack of contenders and holding his position in the GC standings. Vincenzo Nibali, the winner of this years Giro d'Italia, fell on hard times and lost ground, as did perennial favorite Alberto Contador, who has fought valiantly after a series of crashes in the opening days of the tour. He was able to hang on the the back end of the lead group of contenders until the very end climb, where he was dropped and lost valuable seconds.

yeah, we have a group out here that get all outfitted up, especially this time of year when the tour is on. i'll say this, the group i see haul ass along the country roads. those guys are flying along. i see a lot of mountain bikers cruising around on the trails too. between the bikes and all the gear they have piled up on them, it has to get pretty expensive.

the drag caused by a normal pair of shorts would be minimal for what they are doing. They must like the look, for whatever reason that may be.

Hell yes! He rode great during this stage but he won't keep the jersey because he sucks in the higher mountains. BMC are hoping that Van Garderen or Richie Port can use this to springboard them up the leader-board.

they actually spoke about this quite a bit after the stage yesterday on the tv coverage. the prevailing thought was that they wouldnt put up a huge effort to protect the jersey, but the team likely would rally around him and drive the peleton leading up to the Pyrenees climbs. each day they are in yellow is good for the whole team. Tejay is in great position, Porte had that unfortunate flat tire a couple stages back that lost him some time, but nothing that couldn't be made up. the problem Porte has is that for him to get back into things, it would require attacking Van Garderen and that isnt likely to happen. he will likely work with Tejay as he has done previously with Chris Froome on team Sky.
