Yeah, that is a classy move by a classy organization. I'd be hard pressed to think of a better run sports team (of the four majors) than the Spurs. I'm sure people will tell me if I am wrong, but I don't really remember any outcry regarding them bending rules or cheating (other than Stern's clearly overreaching penalty on not playing players... I honestly don't think I will ever get over that, and I'm not even a Spurs fan.)

And players just don't play their entire career for a specific team anymore (especially HOF guys), especially when the guy has no off-court distractions.

Realistically, 7 million isn't going to make a difference to their championship dreams, and in some respects, I'd rather not have the money so I could suck more and get a decent draft pick as opposed to paying some mid-30 year old 20 million dollars for some reason.

Chop that at least in half for taxes/agents/pr people/advisors. maybe even more, depending on what deals he had with his various advisors/agents:

$120 mil

got divorced, messy divorce. to a chick who was smart enough to marry him right before he signed his first big free agent contract.

$60 mil

$20 mil + lost to a financial advisor.

$40 mil he and his wifey/family/friends/entourage lived, spent, worked through over 13+ years?

Timmy broke.

Wifey got out/got paid a few years back cuz she saw the end coming. She even cruelly spiked the ball on the way out, calling timmy gay in the divorce proceedings. Bad enough she took half of every dollar he made during their time together; she had to go and out Duncan and his college sweetheart Marc Blucas.

You're conveniently leaving out endorsements.

There is no way to be sure, but Duncan was still pulling in at least a couple million per year in endorsements in the last few years. And last decade it was probably more. I'm sure he has made a minimum of $30M in endorsements for his career.

You are asking me why I think it is dumb for a basketball team to pay a player a salary for being retired?

Besides any obvious answer ... salary cap hit.

Yeah, that is what i am asking.

Also, why do you care?

The Spurs have been one of the best run, classiest organizations in the world of sports over the last 20 years.

So I fail to see why them taking care of the best player to ever put on their uniform one last time is dumb...

They're obviously going to tank this year, so taking a cap hit on Duncan's salary is a smarter move than paying someone else (for possibly multiple years) to reach the salary floor.

Why do you care that I care? And how are you measuring how much I care?

This is a forum. We discuss sports and related matters regularly. I've probably voiced that I'm glad E'Twaun Moore got paid this off-season. Why should I care about E'Twaun Moore's finances?

I don't think you questioning why posters are voicing opinions on topics brought up on this forum is a path you want to go down.

They get hit either way whether they chose to pay him or not. By waiving him they can spread it out over 3 years.

Swapping Gasol for Duncan--you lose some defense, but gain offense?

I don't see a Popovich team with Parker/Ginobili/Gasol/Leonard/Aldridge/Green et al missing the playoffs. Esp since 41-41 made the post-season in the West this season. 42-40 was good enough for a 6 seed. You hang around, make the post-season and if Golden State loses Curry and/or injury-prone KD, then you're suddenly in the mix for the Finals again.
