I saw a very cool occurrence on the news yesterday. Zobrist lives in the general Lakeview neighborhood. A couple people stopped him on the sidewalk when he came home. Soon the crowd grew to where it was down the block. It was just neighborhood people and kids wishing him well and asking for autographs. He gave of his time until he had to go but he said he welcomed them moving ahead and hoped to sign for anyone he missed that day. This isn't some sentimental fool. He has won a world series in the past. Much respect. I know, blah, blah, blah, but that is also God's work from a man of faith. There is no way he didn't recognize parallels to what he learned in his religion and that moment in front of him. |

I saw a great tweet of a facebook post made by his wife a few years ago celebrating his 1000 MLB game played. She told the story about after High School Zobrist had no offers to play college ball so he paid $50 to attend a showcase because he was uninvited by college recruiters or scouts and he did receive an offer from Olivet Nazarene an NAIA school in Kankakee. Guys tell great stories about his time at Olivet. A couple wanted to draft him after his junior year but he wanted $25,000 which was considered too much money. He transferred to Dallas Baptist for his senior year so he could get more exposure and was a 6th round pick by the Astros. He's a study of perseverance and desire. Gotta love guys like this. |
