"Homecoming Queen Bethany Groenke has died in a car crash...is something we would report to you if she had been driving drunk!"

This is awesome because not even my own Wisconsin high school would have done something this tone-deaf and ridiculous, and we did shit that was tone-deaf and ridiculous. The worst we had was when they momentarily put everyone on lockdown because the iguana got out of the biology classroom.

I remember something like this right before prom my senior year, except they would make the announcement in person in the cafeteria at lunch. Buffalo Grove had open campus, so if you went out, you missed it anyway, but the story was that the girl who was homecoming queen that year was killed in an accident the night before, which was all well and good, except for the fact that she was in like 3 of my classes that morning, on top of being one of the more recognizable seniors in the class...so yeah, that worked really well.

I seem to recall our SADD group doing something where a couple people wore signs around their necks that they died because of drunk driving. They went to all their classes but they didn't talk or interact with anyone.

Something really needs to be done about drunk shaming. There is really nothing different between you and them except a 12 pack.

Yeah, we had that, too, but sans signs: the teachers had lists of participants distributed to them to make sure that there weren't any unapproved students using the occasion to ignore everyone, and if they tried to, they got yelled at for making a travesty of a good-faith effort to teach against drunk driving, and if you can guess that there's been some shifting of first-person pronouns to third-person pronouns in this anecdote, good reading.
