I'd probably grab a Cabernet. And it wouldn't need to be Saturday.

How have I never heard of Mariano's? I feel so out of the loop.

Sounds like a great place to get drunk while the wife buys groceries.

Pick 'n' Save wanted to get into the Chicago market but correctly assessed that unlike Milwaukee, Chicago shoppers thought too much of themselves to buy groceries from a place that sounds like what a six-year-old does with boogers, so they started a Dominick's knockoff with wine.

Well, if true, I hope it all went very smoothly ... if not, I imagine she might be a little Whorse.

Would have never known that. Good rebranding tho. Thank you.

It's actually just another Roundy's brand, which apparently is now owned by Kroger. Both Pick n Save and Mariano's are under that umbrella.

At first I thought Mariano's was pretty nice when they first trickled into Chicagoland. Arlington Hts was one of the first ones to get one at Northwest Highway & Dryden. But the more and more I go I realize it's below average. And their produce sucks.

There are too many ethnic grocers who get the basics right to be going to Marianos.

You guys are pretty spoiled with grocer selection. Many parts of the country get super Walmart and maybe another chain that is high priced like Jewel or worse.

We're saturated for sure. You have all the Super's- Target, Wal-Mart and then Meier. We still have Jewel. Woodman's is very popular. Then Butera's and Caputo's. Mariano's seem to be popping up quite a bit too. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's. Aldi's.

Meijer! My mom loves shopping there! They are the worst. I can't believe gained a foothold in IL. They're terrible!

Meijer is good for stocking up on cheap shelf-stable stuff but you're taking your life in your hands with their meat/produce. I got their ground beef one time and from first bite I resigned myself to food poisoning. So Michigan Wal-Mart, basically.

Huh. Never had a problem with Meijer produce / steaks. But then I've only been to Meijer in MIchigan. Could be the Michigan-based Meijers have to comply with Michigan retail meat processing/sale rules and regulations, which are some of the strictest in the nation. which is good and bad. good in that you're not likely to catch food poisoning. Bad in that Michigan can't have Chicago-style taquerias on every corner. Michigan meat/health/whatever inspectors would never let La Pasadita operate the way they do in Chicago.

Haven't had a problem with Meijer...been going to the Round Lake one since it opened (my wife swears that it's worth a 15 minute drive to get groceries, the only thing worth it is that I don't have to go to fucking Wal-Mart). Their meat has been fine, and the produce has been really good at this one...better than the Gurnee Jewel or Mariano's.
