She's so black.

Rachel Dolezal -- the white former NAACP leader who believes she's black -- is doubling down with a legal name change to Nkechi Amare Diallo.

The 39-year-old filed to adopt the West African moniker in Washington State ... according to Daily Mail. Nkechi is short for Nkechinyere in the Nigerian language of Igbo, and translates to "gift of god."
Her new last name, Diallo, comes from the Fula people of West Africa and means "bold" ... which seems all too fitting for the artist formerly known as Rachel.

Nkechi maintains she still identifies as a black woman. Her baby boy's name already reflects that, and now hers does too.

Well, it's a slippery slope when we get so "correct" that we're afraid to call things what they are and everything is "fluid" and a man can "identify" as a woman and a woman as a man. Why not a white as a black? Hell, maybe I'll "identify" as a grizzly bear. But not all the time. I'm "fluid".

Interesting story I read about that. Turns out, identifying as black may be an immutable quality given your upbringing, but living as black is a "choice", and that while skin color isn't the sole determinant of "race identification", you have to "earn" what can only be called "blackness" by being oppressed (meaning that the entirety of black culture is intertwined with overt oppression, that you can only "be black" if you've been oppressed), and consequently any observations identifying the similarities of gender identification and so-called "racial identification" are sorely misplaced. Go figure.

Don't believe me? Just read: http://theweek.com/articles/560693/diff ... -explained

I assumed you were making a reference to the feelings of gay people and transgendered people. It just seems like something that is a little bit of a hot button issue for you.

No I have been very clear I am not against LBGT in any manner whatsoever. This lady is ridiculous in my opinion. Someone said above though that basing things on feelings and giving them some legal, moral or ethical traction can come up later in more serious matters possibly. I can't think of one off the top of my head in case you were going to ask.

Regarding transgender specifically though I do think some believe it is different than other modern protected classes. I think that is because while there may be some genetic reason for that there are also some that simple feel i.e. identify as the other sex. Its possible I am mixing up transgender and transvestite though. Some of it is confusing to me but I am certainly not frightened.

This doesn't have anything to do with feelings though. This would be like if I decided I was going to identify as short even though I am tall.

Race is an imperfect classification but it is a genetic classification which is why what she is doing is something that no one should accept.

The problem is that people think gender is also genetic. It is not. Obviously, there is a genetic component but it is far more complex than just XX or XY for many different reasons.

If gender is mostly about feelings then I have to ask when you decided that you wanted to be a man. Why did you choose to not be a woman?

I am not following your question so I will ask you to clarify. I do not feel I chose to be a man in any way. What are some of the other reasons that could have made me a woman outside of genetics?

Didn't JLN just lay out the complexities of racial identification? I could ask you when you decided you wanted to be white and why you chose not to be black.

In fact, unlike gender, race truly is socially constructed and designed to separate people based upon something as arbitrary as skin color for political purposes that should be obvious to all of us.

As you admit above, gender is genetic and based upon chromosomes. Yes, about a third of a percent of people feel as if they have been "mis-assigned".

Is anyone arguing that a small number of people don't have such feelings?

Race is genetic. It's an imperfect classification and it gets worse with every generation but it still is genetic.

It is socially constructed but it is genetic. Height is socially constructed too but I can't identify as short when I am not either.

It is based partially on chromosomes. There are other factors that come into play. There are many more combinations than just XX an XY. If it was based solely on chromosomes those would be considered different genders. There are also multiple societies that have more than two genders. Also, when you combine the concept of "gender roles" you can see how those have changed so often through society. By watching my kid during the day I am violating what was once a gender role in that the woman stayed home and watched the kid. I also do a majority of the cooking. That is another traditionally female gender role. Obviously, no one would call me transgender for performing these roles but if I put on a dress to do them many would. It's an arbitrary standard that isn't based on chromosomes.

It depends how you are using feelings. If you mean that the feelings are a choice they make that is different than the feelings being a manifestation of what they actually are based on biology.

A lot of people try and discount people who are different than them because it is just them making a choice to be different because it is easier to deny rights to people on choices they make.

Okay, let's stipulate that all physical characteristics are genetic.

Why not? How is that any different than identifying as a man when you are a woman? Why are you afraid of people who are different than you?

It's actually based wholly on chromosomes.

And we call those "abnormalities".

Now you've moved from discussing actual genders into discussing gender roles. But I will state that there is ample scientific evidence that the roles the majority of people "choose" is far from arbitrary or socially constructed and the differences exist across species of primates. For example, if you place a bunch of dolls and a bunch of toy trucks in a cage with young chimpanzees, the females will overwhelmingly choose to play with the dolls while the males grab the trucks.

That is a contradiction. If XX and XY determine gender than what are those who are neither?

It's not moving on. It's part of gender. You seemingly want to say "It's all genetics and that is it". Behavior is a large part of gender. No one is arguing that genetics doesn't play a part in gender. Genetics plays a part in virtually everything that exists. It isn't as simple though as you seemingly want to make it and there is mountains of evidence that in regards to gender that it isn't as simple as XX and XY.

If you really want to get the point though that gender is completely genetic, then it would also follow logically that gender confusion would be completely genetic, and therefore, identifying as a man when you are a woman is also genetic, and then you have quite the conundrum because you are claiming that genetics is actually causing genetics to be wrong.

If they aren't chosen then genetics is determining their gender to be the opposite of their genetic sex so I'm not really sure how you can say gender is solely based on chromosomes when it is in fact not.

No you are making more sense differing between sex and gender. Outside of the abnormalities Jorr mentions like hermaphrodites possibly there are only two sexes. This whole gender identity is as you said complicated.

When you want to do this you really should read more carefully or I should type slower and more clearly. Where I write I think that is because I am referring back to the SOME may think that.
