He was ahead of his time in noticing that much of religion is pointless. It's a shame he didn't go all the way.

He said that transubstantiation was wrong. I mean, wasn't that obvious? You really think you're eating Jesus?

So there was no reform there.

And he actually said that he was eating bread that Jesus was "present" in.

Right, Lutheranism is a stepping stone between the literally-eating-Jesus voodoo of the papists and the sensible symbolism of the other liberal Prots.

Of course I do.

Why do you think that Catholics actually take care of the poor and under served?

Wrong. He'd fling a handful of his own shit at people who despised the Mass by eliminating the Eucharist.

There are still indulgences.

People abuse systems all of the time. Human beings will be human beings.

The eastern schism, which resulted in the Orthodox church was mostly due to the infallibility of the pope. The western schism started by Luther was due to a multitude of reasons including transubstantiation and other issues with the Catholic church - the pope and the church selling indulgences, popes and bishops having mistresses and their own armies, etc.

Numerous popes have had mistresses.

I don't find it helpful to make my own life decisions based upon the poor behavior of a few.
