CNN Verified account @CNN 28m28 minutes ago Former Sen. Bob Dole speaks as he's awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by Congress http://cnn.it/2rf6nGB Sad to see these WWII heroes barely hanging on. Old age is a bitch. Nice to see him get this medal however. A great American and a life well lived. |

Amazing he is still among us. I saw him in the '96 Wheaton, IL 4th of July parade ( the year he was campaigning...) it was really cool to see all the Secret Service everywhere. |

Politics are funny. It seems that if you can get into your nineties people will say nice things about you regardless of how they disliked you before. Sure there are a few exceptions but mostly true. |

I think he had his political opponents but everyone considered him a good statesman. |

Sure but I’m not hanging his photo next to Ike’s in my upstairs hall. |

Of course not Ike but there probably isn't a guy besides McCain in Washington that you can compare to him. |

I bet there’s some dude in SE DC that took a hit in Nam and saved some brothers and sent some kids to college and never pandered to nobody. I mean having a better character than Bill Clinton or Donald Trump isn’t that hard to find. |

I mean having a better character than Bill Clinton or Donald Trump isn’t that hard to find. Me thinks you may want to look into this individual's history. Great stuff on him and Inouye. Pandering is a given in the political landscape that requires money to get elected. Your example certainly exists. This individual did not run for public office. The concept of running for public office (unless you are a Pritzker) requires one to humble thyself and pander like a mofo. It would be great if it was not the case, but it is. http://articles.latimes.com/1996-01-20/news/mn-26660_1_elizabeth-dole Pander what ya got as best ya can and pray for rain. Dole pandered poorly, and did come across as a rube because of it. That honestly should have been a selling point. Who wants real estate investor snake oil salesman as your president/congressman (ooops). Most money appears to have come from the wife's job. See attached, and feel free to add more if anyone locates it. Cannot recollect if there was big family money on either side. This is not BIG money. It would be for beni, thusly beni will not be running for public office soon. |

Bush Sr. had more money if memory is correct, and was not a cripple. It is odd to say in today's dem vs repub political environs...both were qualified to serve as president. |
