2018 has been deadlier for schoolchildren than service members

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/pol ... f8ad35417a

The school shooting near Houston on Friday bolstered a stunning statistic: More people have been killed at schools this year than have been killed while serving in the military.

Very cute. I’m sure my fallen brothers will love your snark. Reconsider this.

Do you think active members of the military are proud that military service has become less deadly than being a kid at school?

You're right, it's not a problem that so many children get shot.

You do realize that's a stupid argument right? It's not like Chicago is an island were people have to be searched prior to entry. You can drive a mile outside of the the city and buy as many guns as you want.

The holiday is not for active military or even retired.

The Chicago people don’t do that though because we are told they are too poor to get a drivers license and got to Walmart or sams club out of city limits.

If they are dead, then they probably wouldn't be upset over IMU's thread here.

I know that, but the active members probably have more nuanced opinions on the subject than the dead ones.

I have a feeling that some fallen soldiers' heavenly spirits might be a bit disappointed in the state of America currently.

I think most of the active members would probably not want Memorial Day mocked in this way. You can be disgusted by the school gun violence and in favor of very strict gun control law changes without also disrespecting a holiday meant to honor those killed in service of their country.

Yes. Sometimes important issues have uncomfortable dialogue. An excuse used often by the side that doesn't want to affect change.

You're right, it's not a problem that so many children get shot.

has anyone put in any research as to common threads as to why these kids snap and decide to go out in a blaze of glory taking out as many of their classmates as possible? call me old fashioned but i'd also wanna wonder about what drives kids to wanna go and slaughter a bunch of their classmates as opposed to just HOW they go and slaughter a bunch of their classmates.

i'm not trying to trivialize the whole gun volume thing (in fact the new york times tweeted that the ONLY variable to explain all the school shootings in america vs the world = the # of guns in america) -- cuz if i was doing that i'd say that any country that has the far and away highest # of tall buildings and playboy playmates is therefore going to have the highest # of playboy playmates jumping out of tall buildings -- but when the new york times has spoken it's kind of like joe buck broaching a topic during his fox sunday NFL game of the week broadcast: that's all she wrote / end of line / he said good day sir!

Probably access to guns, culture of violence (games like GTA are probably more harmful than even I, a Vice City lover, would like to admit), overprescription of SSRIs.

Yep.

Asians are more well-adjusted and capable of playing violent games without killing people.

Of course they do buy used panties from vending machines and enjoy tentacle porn so there are trade-offs.

How many children are attending school relative to how many people are active military members?

Definitely warps the view when you think of it that way.

40 out of 20,000,000 isn't as bad as 30 out of 1,300,000.
