I hope Julie and Jason are sitting at home right now contemplating the privilege they have of not being weeded out of the gene pool due to a lot of white males dying on some beach 6,000 miles away 70 plus years ago .

Its kind of a misunderstood operation as the real enemy was Stalin and the entire point of the operation was to try and make it to Berlin before he did. The Germans were beaten and the war was certainly over at that point. Had been for more than a year.

That whole area between Caen and Cherbourg is really interesting and a great place just to drive around and check out. You see remnants of the invasion everywhere in really unexpected places. The cemetary is very well done.

Agreed. This is a must-visit for any American visiting France.

But Eisenhower didn't try to beat Russia to Berlin. He knew the casualty cost and let them have it.

Quote:
Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is will trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

It wasn't young men not only gave it all on the beach but across the German rear thanks to the young men of the 82nd and 101st Airborne. A tradition of LGOPs(Little Group of Paratroopers) that I learned all about in the 82nd.

I'll have a beer today in everyone's memory.

Well the last president was chewing gum during a D-Day ceremony a few years ago, which in France would be considered quite rude. But keep imagining things to get upset with the president about, burrito.

Well I was in the 82nd but I'm not old enough to be DS's dad.

The division is still super proud of D-Day. New troopers are expected to learn all the MOH winners from the campaign and the DZs. The idea of LGOPs just falling in behind enemy lines and fucking shit up is also hyped.

Has to be an incredibly solemn sight to see the cemetery. I hope one day to have the chance to see it.

Impossible to imagine being on one of those boats approaching the beach knowing you'd be lucky to survive.

Its the paratroopers that really got cut to pieces. There are entire rows at the cemetery that are just paratroopers. Most of the landings encountered light and scattered resistance except Omaha.

One really cool thing about the cemetery its largely maintained by local French schoolkids, so if you go there on a school break or weekend you'll see them mowing the grass and cleaning the gravestones. Its pretty touching. A lot of French homes in the area fly both the tricolour and American flag side by side even today, which is doubly remarkable since you hardly see French fly their flag alone anywhere else in their country. Most of them still cant speak English worth a shit but still, you get a feel for our special relationship with the French republic. If you ever go to beaches be sure to check out the ceiling at the chapel.

Today we mark another milestone: the 74th anniversary of #DDay, the Allied invasion of Normandy. On June 6, 1944, more than 70,000 brave young Americans charged out of landing craft, jumped out of airplanes, and stormed into hell...

Like I have said before I am a historybuff/wargamer. He showed me his medals and ribbons. Most times you only pathfind once but he did all three,I would not have wanted to get into a bar fight with that guy.
The WW2museum in New Orleans is really great.best part is at each station they have voice recordings of real normal soldiers talking about their experiences.

another battle anniversary today is Belleau Wood, look it up,unless you are a Marine.
Basically the first large battle for the Americans in WW1,the 1st Marine Brigade was part of it and they where kinda stuck when Sgt Mgr Dan Daley stood up and cried,Come on you sons of bitches, you want to live forever!!. It was also in this battle that the Germans nicknames the Marines,Devil Dogs
