DSA just knocked off a mainstream lib in NY-14, and a pretty prominent one at that. Pretty neat.

Seems like a miscalculation by Gillibrand on this one. She had been doing a much better job at pretending to be on the left than Harris up to now.

They had basically the same views.

There's still plenty of time for Gillibrand to windsock her way to glory, don't worry.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!

Another victory for civility!

Is Crowley the guy who was taking GOP money to fund his race?

Another window into how Trump is clearly at his happiest when he's gossiping about what he watched on TV. "Wow! Big news! Developing story in New York! This guy? He's done!"

She definitely run on Bernie's utopian, unrealistic platform:
- Medicare for all
- tuition-free public colleges
- abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency

1 and 2 are very nice ideas and I'd love to see the math and structural reform to make possible.

Abolishing the immigration and Customs enforcement agency? So is it really a thing that people just don't want any kind of national security?? yikes.

Still.....would.

I think abolishing ICE as a position is a fairly recent phenomenon. Not sure if Bernie aligns himself with that. I've been tuning into some of the pre election coverage after she won and watched a local TV debate between the two that took place a few days before the election. Man, that Crowley dude is as dumb as rocks. He kept repeating this anti Trump mantra while she launched attack after attack on him that dealt with local issues in their district. She also killed him on his disconnectedness from not only their district but NY itself: she used him basically residing in the DC suburbs (and enrolling his kids in DC suburbs schools) against him. His responses were incredibly dull and unpersuasive. I don't know if he was just lazy or unprepared, or some combination of both. Not a good look for centrist democrats if their star candidates are as complacent and disconnected from their communities as this goof appeared to be.

It's both of the parties. The same thing is driving support for Trump that is driving support for Bernie. The People just don't want the leaders the Establishment is trying to force down our throats.

it's not a good look for centrist Democrats or Republicans.

This is just yet another sign that the established career politicians are on notice. This is going to continue.

You got that right, my friend.

Then he'd have lunch with the president, even from the opposing party, figure out what everyone needed and actually pass bills.

Her district is the Bronx! It's as automatic for the Democrats as any number of seats here. The Republicans will desultorily run some fat guy named Tony Del Pizza or something running on a platform of "doin' somethin' 'bout the [giant finger quotes] BUG INFESTATIONS ROUN HERE" and lose handily.

The problem is that the Democratic Establishment refuses to acknowledge that we have been living in an era of populist revolt--spawned by the failure of neoliberal economic policies--since 2008. Obama's first presidential campaign was imbued with populist rhetoric, but Obama largely abandoned a populist vision upon being elected. His half-assed attempts at financial reform both failed to address the fundamental issues of economic inequality and underemployment that have plagued American society since the Clinton administration and maintained neoliberal hegemony. Obama's refusal to challenge the central pillars of neoliberalism exacerbated populist anger and paved the way for the ascendance of Donald Trump, who shrewdly recognized the political opportunity created by Obama's cowardice. Trump's disingenuous, faux populism has triumphed only because the Democratic party has yet to acknowledge its ideological folly of the last three decades and return to a politics by and for "the people".

It's the 14th district of NY. Anyone with a D after their name is electable there.

As long as she carries the Democrat label she will cow to the powers at the top. Even the king of rube mountain knows better than to fall for the potential of a young politician. She will start disappointing you the instant she takes office.
