So far, it is has killed 11 people this year without even really trying and charging people tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege. Now, some people have survived to take the selfie at the top but with the way the mountain is stepping up it's game it won't be long before it can get that kill rate up to the point where there are no summit selfies at all! Well done mountain doing what mountains do!

NBC news cannot get enough Everest coverage. They run the same segment with a few updates everyday. The "serious" news is crazy weather, Trump did something wacky and Mount Everest.

I never paid much attention to this until this weekend. Watch some news and read a BBC article yesterday. What a mess. The pictures of the lines up and down with people like they are at Sams or Costco on a Saturday morning tell me all I need to know. I will avoid it with the same gusto.

My other thought is what is the great satisfaction anymore anyway in conquering it? If that many other people can do it that you wait in a line I would say another challenge is needed.

The weather is way over the top this year. The local catch phrase being used now is "impact day" and active something or another. They are making a habit of breaking into prime time viewing over low level stuff in my opinion as well.

you can't even take a selfie at the top because there's so many people up there it will look like you are taking a selfie at Lalapalooza on a cold day.

All those people probably hide the dead bodies you walk over to get to the top though. Less dead bodies at Lalapalooza.

Everest isn't even top 5 in terms of deadliest mountains. It's just a commodity for yuppies like Kirkwood to brag about. It means nothing to climb it other than you have money. A real challenge? K2.

Everest has highest mountain privilege. Pike's Peak can do the job but there's a structural bias against it.

There is a real point there in that, from a mountaineering standpoint, Everest really is no big deal, particularly for a peak of its size. Which is exactly why so many goofs get up there in the first place. One needn't have the great technical skills that are necessary to climb K2 or The Eiger.

That is exactly why I am glad that Mount Everest is standing up for itself and killing in such bigger numbers now.

It has to be jarring to just continue on past the dead bodies. I'm not talking about green boots and the like, I'm talking abut the people who died the day before. Or the guy who stopped climbing and is still alive but who you know will be dead within a few hours.

This is a pretty good account of the bodies up there this year. https://frostyoneverest.home.blog/

Spoiler alert, they're doing the same to K2. It's a race to the bottom with a race to the top as companies try to offer the lowest rates to get you to the peak. There's 7 summit expeditions set for K2 in the Summer.

Everest is like capitalism.txt with rich dudes getting to the top on back of the locals while they ignore the carcasses of the dead and dying that surround them (not that they can do anything for them, to be fair). At the same time they're literally shitting up the mountain with garbage an human excrement which is threatening the water table at lower altitudes. At least the Sherpas get paid decently.

krakauer has been saying this for over 20 years. it's just been getting worse. even back when he made his disaster expedition, it was already starting to get more about warring adventure campaigns to rich people. now it's gotten so out of hand, this is going to happen pretty much every year.

douglas adams used to joke that everest was just a "smart jog" up from base camp to the summit. he was defending that Kilimanjaro was the real mark of a climber.

everest *was* an impossible mountain to climb until it became a resort with base camp. since then, it literally is just being taken along by sherpa who wind up being your valet to the summit.

i have zero sympathy for any of these climbers who are still paying up and taking these trips. if i really wanted to climb everest i'd wait until the tourists are cut off and it became about actually climbing again.

The article I read said it was less crowded and an issue coming up from the Tibetan side but China kind of fucks it up so that is why. And I guess it is less acceptable from the glory viewpoint. Like hitting from the women's tees in golf or something.
