Dude in white was telegraphing his punches.

These people are all useless...that's just fucked up.

And I'm sure the skank in the tube top was just running her mouth and egging the whole thing on...probably all drunk.

Our league had junior umpires working alone for minor games (think that’s 8-10) but they had to add adult umps because the parents were jerks. More $ for me at least.

I think the youngest we ever used was 19-20 yr olds. And I only saw two people kicked out of the park. And no fights in 5-6 years? But we were pretty close to zero tolerance.

Back when my kids played little league one time an ump didn't show so they asked for volunteers. I obliged but since there was no mask they had me stand behind the pitcher and call balls and strikes from there. I recall one questionable call over which a kid's mom lost her mind. I offered to let her take over if she thought she could do better which of course she declined. So I responded with something to the effect of C U Next Tuesday.

i umped as a high schooler and regularly had to deal with people bitching and moaning about the generally large strike zone that i had. the strike zone that if i didn't have, we'd be just walking batters the entire game.

umping a game and the team in the field is getting thumped.... a ground ball was hit to the short stop the kid on 2nd kind of did that hop skip over the ball it bounced up hit the SS in the chest then bounced off the runner. I called everyone safe and this lady about blew her gourd. she had been a "oh come on thats not a strike" lady for the entire game and now was like, "YOUNG MAN WHY DIDNT YOU CALL THE RUNNER OUT IT HIT HIM" i turn around and said, "the ball hit the fielder first, making it a live ball. if it hit the runner first then he'd be out but it didn't. a pretty standard rule in baseball" and i said it like a douchebag kid would. her husband or whoever was like "WATCH IT" and i just shrugged and turned around. and then i could tell that things were not ok behind me. but it was settled i guess at some point.

the league director told me that someone complained and said i was disrespectful but that he checked with someone who said it wasn't at all. it very much was.

Not hard to see why there is such a shortage of umps. And it feeds on itself. Crazy parents run off a lot umps, so you get less experienced umps doing it, which leads to more bad calls, which fires up the crazy parents. And repeat....

My son umps for our local house league, both baseball and softball. He’ll do about 40 games this spring/summer. Typically does the older age groups (10-14 year olds). Once in 3 years he has needed to actually eject a coach, but about once a week he tells me about some small level of an issue with a crazy parent. It’s pretty much always that they don’t know the rule they are yelling about.

I was an umpire from when I was 12 until I was 18. Last game I did, some lunatic dad followed me to the parking lot, screaming, because he disagreed with two calls I made. It was hilarious seeing the realization of how fucking dumb he was wash over him as he was answering questions by the police.

In my experience, once theyre age 10-12, the parents are peak lunatic levels. Because Lil' Timmy still cries when he strikes out and no one wants their kid to suck, so they obviously blame the umpire that CONTROLS EVERYTHING. Moms especially. As they get older into more organized ball, the dads and coaches get more lippy because they think they need to act like a big league manager. The kids/players rarely say anything. Unless theyre from some elite travel team. Fuck those teams.

Little league is the worst youth sport of them all because of the rules, the ignorance of the fans, and the incapability of most of the coaches. I would hope that all of those people who went onto the field end up getting arrested, banned from attending games in the future, and heavily fined. That was ridiculous.

I got to be thinking about this...doesn't the opposing manager have to appeal that the batters were out of order? If the ump just did this on his own as a "white knight", I get see how things got out of hand.

I umped as a kid. My first year I umped tee-ball. At one point I got a call from the guy who runs the umps who told me that for the next game they were sending in an adult ump to work with me cause one of the tee ball coaches in that game was crazy. Sure enough, I got the opportunity to run him from the game when he ran onto the field repeatedly to argue calls.

What in the world could there be to argue about in tee ball?

Ball placement?

Back when I was umpiring in high school and college, I had the middle school aged kids...house league in Arlington. Had a kid that was probably 4'10", maybe...8th grader. Half the house league pitchers couldn't hit his strike zone (arm pits to knees)...his dad was pushing hard for him to get in some travel program, and he happened to be the house league manager. Halfway through the season, the kid has shit for a batting average, but probably close to a .600 OBP...his dad asks me to expand the strike zone on him a little to make him swing...so I do...called the kid out on strikes looking at his shins twice and at his shoulders once. Kid wouldn't take the bat off his shoulder. So after the 3rd at bat, which ended an inning, I'm grabbing a drink of water and this rather angry looking soccer mom comes barreling up to me just screaming about how her kid isn't going to make travel striking out and I'm doing my job poorly...put 2 and 2 together and flat out told her that the coach asked me to expand the zone on his kid because he wasn't getting the bat off his shoulder. She turns beat red and starts yelling at him...I go about my business.

So fast forward to the next half inning, kid's team puts up a nice rally and he comes back to the plate. So, first pitch, right down the middle, waist high. Kid doesn't swing...I call strike one, and promptly get hit in the side of the head with a rosin bag. Ran the manager. Ran the mom. Ran the kid because he had the balls to utter "that's what you get for calling strikes on me"...all with the blessing of my supervisor, who happened to be at the game because his nephew played for the other team. The supervisor called the cops, the mom was banned from all the parks in Arlington for life. The kid and his dad were put on probation by the house league...and he didn't make the travel team, or his freshman baseball team the next year. Best part was that he wound up playing house league in Palatine the next year...for like 6 games until his coach realized he was terrible and didn't let him start...he took his ball and went home.
