They're right in their critique of the Marvel movies. I'm sure of Kubrick were alive, he'd join the chorus. These Marvel films are just predictable formulaic schlock at this point. Where's the suspense if every film guarantees the heroes will win and survive? Plot armor in these films is thicker than a Jedi's vs. a half-dozen stormtroopers. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/o ... despicable It's funny watching how angry people on Twitter are getting at these two geniuses of film making because they dare speak out against the mouse's crappy films. |

Their beef should be with the studios who follow Marvel's plan. There's a place for popcorn flicks and a place for serious film. At least there should be. |

I would say the legendary directors are right. It is just that the Marvel movies are fine but seem to be destined to be considered l9ike comedies. Not worthy of artistic consideration and awards. |

I'm not a comic book guy but I love all the Avengers movies. I get they aren't for anyone but they are by far the most entertaining movies made these days. However, I don't think they are really a good target for these attacks. They don't hide what they are. They know that it's not going to be a critical success when you have as much cgi as they do. The problem is that other movies are terrible. The list of best movies from the 2010s are laughably bad. Even some of the ones that are at least pretty good are heavily cgi based. Mad Max(bad) and Inception(good) almost always make those lists too. So, the problem isn't that the Avengers movies aren't "cinema" but it's that "cinema" is mostly dead. So yeah, I'll happily watch a Thor movie over a bunch of people frowning at each other for 2 hours, or two people singing about Los Angeles, or a tiger on a boat. Now, those two won't say that because it would also lead to the question as to why they haven't been able to make a great movie lately either. |

I've gone from a dozen movies a year back in the day to 1-2 a year now. It's almost November and the only movie I've seen is Once Upon A Time. |

They're similar to the old serial shorts from the 40s and 50s...the hero survives a close call to fight again next week. Spielberg gets that. Did Martin and Francis bitch about Indiana Jones? |

Like BR, I am not a comic guy. In the entire superhero genre, I really only like the Dark Knight (serious edge) and Guardians of the Galaxy (surprisingly funny). You’d have to go back to the Superman 2 to find anything I wish to watch again. If you just like action movies with weak plots, then the genre is fine. If you’re a fan boy, then have at it. There is a place for these things. |

The rub isn't hero. The rub is "super" hero. It's almost to the point that in that world, there's more people with extraordinary powers than there are regular people. It loses the effect |

I may have been a better man before I succumbed to the Superhero Genre. I was all over all of the Dark Knight Movies., but only maybe a few years ago did I start watching the Marvel offerings, and, now that I think of it, the new Star Wars entries probably helped draw me in. I am glad I resisted the "Saw" franchise and all of the unnecessary horror films of the past decade and a half, though (although I did cave for Hostel 1 and 2). A Tarantino/Scorsese/Coppola, etc. Movie sure does stand out, though, thank goodness. |

Many of the comic book movies follow established classic story lines from the print comics. This is one of the reasons the Fox X-Men movies suck so bad. They made up their own shitty storylines. Stand-alone movies can be great too...see WATCHMEN and ROGUE ONE. |

I do think there is a little jealousy here though. The Wolf of Wall Street was a pretty good movie. The Departed was a great but flawed movie. I hated Gangs Of New York but others liked it. Shutter Island was a good but forgettable movie. That's basically the last 20 years of Scorsese movies worth anything. His last movie made in 2016 cost $40-$50 million to make an made about half that at the box office. Hugo basically broke even. The Marvel movies do likely push out other films because of how popular they are. Coppola may as well have been retired since the early 90s besides being an executive producer on Jeepers Creepers 1 and 2. |

Some people think Jaws killed cinema, but I disagree. You can make great movies that are also broad entertainment. The problem is that they have become too broad. There is only so much overlap between American and Chinese culture, so they don't really resonate. This is a big reason why you don't see good comedies anymore. Humor varies wildly depending on cultural context, but everyone laughs at fart jokes so you get Queef: The Movie starring Melissa McCarthy. Scorsese's original point is well taken though, mainstream cinema has became little more than a spectacular product. |

That's why I think Infinity War was such a good movie (within its genre/universe), as there were consequences and a weight to it that End Game and the other movies lack. It's one of the reasons why Star Trek: the Wrath of Kahn is revered. |

But didn’t End Game bend time to undo the way Infinity War ended, thus ruining the entire impact of Infinity War. And I agree, on its own Infinity War was solid for the reasons you noted. But subsequently ruined for me. |

Damn the stealth trilogy of Star Trek II, III, and IV is awesome |

I'll put Scorsese's work the last 20 years above those amusement park rides Disney calls movies though. The Aviator (2004) The Departed (2006) The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) 3 fantastic films right there |

The Wolf Of Wall Street was an enjoyable forgettable movie and The Aviator was bad. |
