One way to prevent venture capitalists from destroying the digital media outlet you work for is to build your own. It occurs to me that he probably deserves a hell of a lot more credit than he ever got from the Deadspin crew.

I think you meant to give the shoutout to Dave Portnoy.

Nope. The Ringer publishes things that are worth reading. That’s the difference.

Someone hasn't listened to any of Barstool's interviews.

True. I’ve checked their stuff out and I just don’t see the appeal, even the PMT podcast. PFT is great at twitter but I have no use for the rest of the entirety of Barstool. It seems like something I would’ve been entertained by in 1998 when I was 12.

I like some of the stuff Barstool Chicago does. The hockey podcast is really good. And the Bears podcast is solid...especially postgame after bad losses.

Yeah Barstool Chicago is good.

Most of the national stuff is garbage but there's a few I enjoy. Robbie Fox is good with the Wrestling/MMA and movie stuff. Big Cat and PFT are good on the Twitter.

That's it though.

He built up the company and brand first and then sold it to the Peter Chernin Group, which specializes in media. A great move by Pres as his talents are in content, not business. He probably would've plateaued where he was at the time of the sale had he not made the sale. Chernin hired Nardini as CEO and then had them move their then spread out talent (KFC, Big Cat, Dave, etc.) to NYC so that they could all be under one roof. I mean back when I started following these guys, they had no podcasts other than KFC's personally produced KFC Radio and the Barstool Rundown was a Skype show where all 3 of them got together with sometimes shitty Internet connections.

Dave is still President of content, which is what he excels at, but Chernin Group pushed them to do things Dave probably never thought he could do. All of those podcasts like PMT, Spittin' Chicklets, Red Line Radio, etc. came because Chernin Group saw the potential there. Dave and his key players still have equity so they have a vested interest to grow the company further, but they had the support and expertise from people who had done it before to push them into new directions.

As arrogant as Dave is, I think in one of his more humbler moments he himself would admit Chernin pushed him to a level he never could've built Barstool too if it remained just him at the top.

Doesn't it seem a little strange for a guy to be bragging so hard about the failings of deadspin when he had to be demoted in order for someone to invest in his company?

How are the amateur boxing tournaments going?

They're going pretty well. If you want to attend the next event, you'll have to go on Stubhub because tickets are sold out

https://www1.ticketmaster.com/event/0100573BDE536C26

Live events are something Deadspin could never pull off.

As for Dave, I don't think he cars about being President rather than CEO. He has $20 million to his name and pretty much gets to do what he wants.

Wow. Selling out a convention center!

He did well in starting it but even his own investors thought he would run it into the ground if he was in charge so it is strange to mock Deadspin for what happened.

He's a promoter and content creator. He's definitely not a manager. Portnoy deserves a lot of credit for turning what was a 1 page gambling tip sheet into a $20 million company. Chernin picked up the baton and turned it into a $160 million and growing company.

Yeah, but a lot of people at deadspin were good content creators too. They seemed to fail in the business side just like Portnoy would have.

It's hard to know who to believe but it sure sounds like Deadspin wasn't even failing monetarily. The new owners basically came in and destroyed a profitable website. At least that's how the former staff is spinning it.

Getting sold to new owners at lower valuations with each new sale would tell us they weren't profitable.

Digital pubs in general are having these issues, heck Barstool would be in the same boat if their blog and columns were their only revenue source. Barstool diversified revenue streams in ways no other publication really tried or could.

they can write blogs, but most of them are replacement level writers and they probably can't podcast or do video successfully either. Other than Magary, which person there would be able to start a website and grow it successfully?

This is all pretty funny since Big Cat did more for Barstool's brand and growth than the president did.

Go ahead and suck a dick, Ogie, but make sure you've got the right dick.

If it weren't for Pres, Big Cat would still be in real estate. He never dreamed he would actually have a job in media. Pres created the platform and gave him the opportunity. Big Can had the talent to run with it and the trust in Pres to quite his day job for it. Now he is a millionaire with equity.

They seemed to fail in the business side just like Portnoy would have.

they can write blogs, but most of them are replacement level writers and they probably can't podcast or do video successfully either. Other than Magary, which person there would be able to start a website and grow it successfully?

I'm quite certain Roth could but he doesn't seem to have that level of ambition. Sounds like he just wants to write and edit and have editorial control over what he writes and edits.
