Quote:
Only one state has met all of the criteria contained in guidelines issued by the federal government for safely reopening businesses and easing social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, according to an analysis by ProPublica. Despite the lack of progress by the overwhelming majority of states, Donald Trump is still pushing them to reopen.

ProPublica based its analysis on state-level data, updated daily, for five metrics stemming from the guidelines for reopening issued by the White House and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Its metrics are the number of positive tests per 100,000 people; the percentage of tests that are positive; the number of tests per 100,000 per day; the availability of ICU beds; and the number of hospital visits for "flu-like illness."

Thirty states have met only three of the goals or fewer, and three of them — Alabama, Alaska, and West Virginia — have met only one of the five.

As of Tuesday, Illinois was the only state to have met all five.

So the guy who complains about how the President doesn't deal in science decided to go with his plan on this?

Should add this to the DB thread for thisguy.

Alaska has exactly 1 COVID death in the month of May and they average like 1 or 2 cases per day with many days at 0 new cases. Yet they haven't achieved more than one of the recommendations?

Hard to drop rate when your rate is really low. About their only bad metric is ICU bed availability.

Every state could have ignored it.

As of this past weekend, less than 15,000 Illinoisans who do not live in a nursing home or assisted living facility have contracted Covid. But don't let facts get in the way of your politics. And follow the science, but only the science that backs your narrative.

Worldometer has the number of Illinois cases at 113k or so. Are you saying that only around 15k of those are not in a nursing home or assisted care facility? If that's true, yikes.

Edit: From the other thread (IL stay at home extended to May), this seems to flip that:

hnd wrote:
gist, state stopped reporting long term care numbers got griped at started reporting again.

As of 5/23, Long Term Care in Illinois:

14,882 cases
2,402 deaths

Everyone else in Illinois
92,914 cases
2,388 deaths

Post subject:  Re: JB Pritzker?

I had it backwards, my apologies. 15K cases from nursing facilities. However, almost 2400 deaths which is half the deaths in IL.

My comment about the science and politics stands.

I wonder if they will ever find out if the nursing residents all gave it to each other, or if the (younger, immune) staff carried and spread it among them (I believe the latter is more likely).

My neighborhood happened to be one of the area hotspots for the virus. As a result I was more than mildly concerned, but less so when it was revealed that the majority of the cases and overwhelmingly the deaths came from a couple of nursing homes within a few blocks from my home.

Is this the death of Nursing homes? I mean if I am 90 and near death, just have a nurse come by my house once a week to throw me bread and jerk me off and I'll take my chances.

I hate to even mention this, but assisted suicide is likely looking better in the eyes of many.

The obvious solution would be for Medicare to pay a fraction of the cost of a nursing home to provide in-home care instead. But there's no one lobbying for that on Capitol Hill.

I've let everyone who could matter know for years that I don't want to be in a senior facility. If I become a major burden on my family I'll end it myself.

My kids used to perform in an annual musical show at the local nursing home. Just the smell of that place made me wretch.

My great aunt had conditions that left her confined to a nearby nursing home from before when I was born. I'd go visit her with my mother and great grandmother for years and later go pick her up for family events and the smell of the place always made me think of loneliness, misery and death.
