If Darkside was truly right, then why would he or you bother with obtaining a FOID card? It is your right to hold a gun, and why would you trust government bureaucracy to obtain a gun to protect yourself against the same government, and against others when that government fails to protect you?

Let's hope you take a gun safety class and educate yourself on how to operate whatever weapon you choose to purchase. Lord knows we don't need more idiots with guns out there.

I don't think DS got much flak for the self defense angle - I seem to remember the pushback was more about Ogie types saying they could easily take cover behind the local Krispy Kreme and take on the army if they ever came for Ogie's collection.

Why bother with a FOID card? Because its appealing to remain out of jail if you ever do need to protect yourself.
Now I am one who believes that the nature of the FLID act is inherently unconstitutional. If we are to accept that showing an ID card to exercise your right to vote is illegal because the price of the card is prohibitive to a voter, then I propose that having to buy a card to exercise another constitutionally guaranteed right is illegal as well.
But as it is the law of the land, and i intend to follow the rules, inhave obtained the proper credentials.

And if/when the law of the land changes and the rules are that you must hand over all of your weapons?

I've always said that the 2nd amendment is the protector of all the other amendments.

It's often the claim that the 2A, in the case of government tyranny, can be used to defend against it. If we believe that minorities feel threatened by the police actions that go beyond what happened in Minnesota then you could say they are doing the same thing that is often cited as a reason for the 2A.
