While our current children's Halloween icon is a witch riding a broom in front of a full moon, the history behind it is much more adult. Witches originally were associated with brooms because they were reported to masturbate with the handles during pagan/satanic ceremonies. During the ecstasy the were said to levitate. You can see reference to this in the opening scene of The VVitch, when the old hag steals the baby, kills it, covers her broom in the gore and rides it into the moonrise. This is not unlike John Wayne in Westerns, when he rode off into the sunset. Wayne is reported to have preferred riding male fists to broom handles
