Brown's Chicken still sucks! Doesn't the other brother own that one?

Investors are chowing down on shares of newly minted publicly traded hot dog chain Portillo's.

Shares of Portillo's (PTLO) — a Chicago-founded outfit with a cult-like following across nine states — exploded more than 50% as investors ate up the stock on its first day of trading on Thursday.

"While we are a 58-year-old company, we are still infants when it comes to our growth inflection point," Portillo's CEO Michael Osanloo said on Yahoo Finance Live.

Dick sold the company in 2014? I completely missed that.

a 60 store regional fast food chain is worth a 2 billion dollar market cap? When's Cook Out's IPO, I like their menu.

I also don't think they have much room to increase prices...they're already super high for a glorified hot dog stand.

Berkshire Partners? Related to Warren Buffett at all? Can't be, Buffett only paid a half billion for all of Dairy Queen (6000 stores worldwide) about a decade prior.

Anything other than a hot dog has turned to trash. Their beef sandwiches are horrible now.

I don't think I have ever seen a TV commercial for Portillo's.

Five Guys went through a significant decline when they sold out and expanded beyond Northern Virginia. But part of that was they tended to go into third rate strip malls. The biggest thing about Portillo's as a business was never really the food, it was the use of real estate.

The way they have expanded beyond Chicago has been interesting. Frequently out of town chains come and open up five or six stores to maximize advertising, then they slowly falter then fall apart. Smashburger had that happen in Chicago, as did Hardee's.

Meanwhile, Portillo's takes forever and opens one store in an excellent location with just the right real estate deal. Just enough to draw the expats at first, and then word of mouth. Personally, I think the beef sandwiches will be deemphasized over time. I don't know if the Barnelli's concept is included in the deal, it never worked well with the drive-thru. The jumbo Vienna dog is still solid albeit dreadfully expensive, burgers and chicken are burgers and chicken, and they are more family friendly than a Chili's while still serving beer for dine-in.

Portillo's could drop one location in every metro area near the Interstate from here to Fort Meyers, as well as expand in Arizona, plus stick one near a few universities which draw a lot of Chicago suburban kids, and do just fine.

It's super unfortunate. Not a lot of good beefs by me. Portillos was always a good baseline and I don't think we've had it in a year or so now. Sucks.

I can't tell because the location closest to my father at Butterfield/355 has been messed up on and off ever since it opened 15+ years ago. I do think they changed their Polish Sausage, which is a shame. All I get is the jumbo dog now, which is fine. Next time I fly into Midway I may have to re-try the meatball sandwich which the Willowbrook location always had.

The one I go to when I’m in town is the North Ave. and Bloomingdale Rd location. Can’t say I noticed
a decline in quality. Should be in town during Christmas so I’ll check it out and see if I notice anything.

Had some one tell me how carefully they researched locations back when Dick owned it. Places would pay off very quickly because he didn’t build them all over the place. The one in Peoria is never a zoo when I’m down there but to be fair I’m rarely in the area these days so who knows. I’m not an Italian beef guy. My order is much like Farve Fan’s (gotta have onions though on the dog) or I get beer and cheddar. I’ll continue to grab it once a quarter when I’m in Burbs or find myself in Peoria around lunch time.

This explains why there are so few locations in AZ. The Tempe store is perfectly placed between ASU and Sloan. Still waiting for a Portillo’s near the Chandler Mall. There were rumors and talk 8 years ago and there is still real estate in the area to make it happen. Not sure what the hold up is. They’ve got a long way to go to get to 600.

Gonna buy a few shares just because I like owning some shares of companies I frequent. Granted, my Curaleaf stock has not done too well even though it was 5 stars in Morningstar.

THIS.
Far better options for most Chicago-land area in the form of local hot dog stands.

Nationally, Portillo's is fine as it's your only option for Italian Beef and a Chicago style dog. I don't waste my time eating there, but MANY seem to love that clusterfuck of a dining experience.

For Burgers...they've always been terrible but burgers at hot dog stands tend to be equally as horrible.

I mean it might be overrated, but eating there at least has the added benefit of upsetting the gays

it's not so much chick-fil-a's producing objectively great food, it's that the rest of the
fast food landscape cranks out increasingly inedible cardboard sandwiches year after year.

I like how you guys are picking apart Portillo's, meanwhile McDonald's stock price is 238 bucks and their food tastes like cardboard with melted cheese on it.
