much respect

I'd really include anyone who served.

we don't like to think about the ugly side of having something you love: you better be prepared to defend it

Thank you for your service.

I don't think I could have even made it through basic training so I appreciate those who chose to do so.

Agreed.

I think I have told this story here before. My grandfather and great uncle on my mom's side were on the ground in WWII. Both were captured by the Germans. As they were marching the POWs across Europe, the brothers actually crossed paths and got to have a short reunion as the Germans gave them a brief respite to get a drink from a river. There was pictures and a big write up in the Tribune about it after the war ended. I remember reading the article and seeing the pictures as a kid, but I think these have been lost in the shuffle at this point. My mom does still have her father's Purple Heart and some other badges as well.

I remember Danny Mac (was cool about it) disagreeing with me here how I loved the national anthem at sporting events. I didn't get into it with him. It's his opinion. I can still remember my first Cubs game my dad (many major battles S, Pacific WW2 vet) teaching me to take my hat off, hand on heart, and face our flag. What a wonderful memory.

I love Kate Smith's version of "God Bless America".

reminds me of a guy a used to work with. very disrespected by coworkers. treated like a moron. one day, one of the guys was talking shit about him behind his back, and i replied 'well at least he risked his life so you can bitch about him'. everyone looked at me stunned. after a long silence i had to explain what i meant, and they shrugged it off like it whatever. just straight assholes.

A year or two before my dad died in 2016 I took him to a Bears game. I remember him turning and shushing the young adults in the row behind us as they gabbed and yukked it up during the anthem.

God bless your father. What this bad behavior on the part of those who act up when the anthem is played I think is pretty much bad parenting when kids were younger. Of course, some of it is also young punks trying to start an incident.
