For nixing the deal with A-Rod after discovering that he and the other prospective buyer were going to skimp on payroll immediately after taking control of the franchise.

As part of a failed process to assume majority ownership, Minnesota Timberwolves minority partners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez submitted financial projections forecasting a sizable retreat in roster payroll that majority owner Glen Taylor believed would jeopardize the franchise's ability to compete for a championship, sources told ESPN.

In documents shared with Taylor, the NBA and The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, Lore and Rodriguez rendered a budget projection as potential majority owners that would've lowered the Timberwolves' payroll to $171 million beginning next season -- below the projected $172 million luxury tax threshold, sources told ESPN. The Timberwolves would've gone from approximately a $25 million-plus tax payment to a team receiving a tax distribution of approximately $6.5 million.

Windhorst or someone mentioned when the deal fell through that the current minority owners (A-Rod and Lore group) push back against the team running into the luxury tax--because as minority owners (1/3rd of the team or so) they're always on the hook for 1/3rd of the luxury tax payments. So that makes sense if their plan going forward would be stay under the tax.

Surprised Cuban sold off the Mavericks on the verge of every current NBA owner getting a $300 million windfall from NBA expansion. Unless they bake in the pv of that windfall payment as part of the sale price, seems you'd wait on selling any franchise until post-expansion.

Remember that lady who glued her hands to the floor to protest chicken wings or something?
