I've linked the full story at the bottom but a quick synopsis is: this girl was kidnapped, robbed, and shot five times to death. She was a University of North Carolina student. And yes, she was very pretty. I'm sure that's probably what caught the attention of the media to make this into a headline in the Huffington Post. The second, that it has a faith-based tie-in. She, according to witnesses, asked the murderer to "pray with her" before he executed her. In more precise words, she said, "Let's pray."

Now, this could be a muddled story the way that "She Said Yes" was. Could be entirely fictional. But I'm going to go by what's been released and say that this girl was brave to say anything at all, knowing she was going to die. I always admire anyone who stands by their convictions--and this girl, to this account, had pure faith that whatever was going to happen to her, she only saw the spiritual side.

Regardless of what the murderer thought, I don't even want to type the name because his story isn't what matters--the girl was genuine. She chose to make the last few moments of her life meaningful to her by devoting herself to faith by "praying". Whether you believe in praying or not, she was not only trying to make final peace with her maker or herself, she was trying to save the soul of the man who was about to take her life. Not surprising he thought nothing of it. I wouldn't be surprised if a guy like this finally "sees the light" before being executed himself. But his moment of faith and hers will never be the same, nor will ever be comparable in its being genuine.

We do mock self-righteous people accordingly; but in this case, this girl wasn't being self-righteous. She was only doing what she, in a moment where her life was going to end, thought was right in her mind. The ultimately sardonic could say she was "tebowing"--I guess that's really dark. But either way, I will nevertheless appreciate the truly spiritual, even if I don't necessarily agree with the deity or the legend or whatever you want to call it. This wasn't a moment of organized religion coming to take advantage. It was simply one final request from someone whose life was tragically and undeservedly taken away.

"She Said Yes" was blown far out of proportion. I really hope this story isn't. It doesn't have to be. We don't need a best seller book grand standing about how God chose these beautiful people to make the right choices. But it's refreshing to hear a small story in which someone stood up for what they believed in, no matter what the consequences.
