I have been Bellringing for the Salvation Army this season and I want to share an observation i had. One of the things I do is ask the little kids if they want to ring the bell. The ones that do all have the same look in their eyes.I GET TO RING THE BELL,that is so fantastic. Then they take the bell and lose their minds ringing it and have the giggles and they walk away with huge smiles and all happy. I wish I could feel like that again over something so simple as what we adults look at a s a crappy little bell.I had so far like five kids run screaming ringing it like madmen and one little girl handed me the bell back said Merry Christmas and gave me a hug.Made my day. |

You weren't the guy that got conned out of his kettle, are you, Chas? http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/9444 ... arles.html "A man claiming to be from the Salvation Army told a bell-ringer outside a Jewel-Osco in west suburban St. Charles that he needed to switch kettles, then stole the one filled with donations." You know, I really couldn't get too worked up about this. I mean, you're collecting for the needy. The guy that stole it was obviously needy. Unless you think it was one of the Koch brothers. |

That is a nice feel good story Chas. I have yet to drop anything in the old Red Kettle this year. I have a feeling I'll drop something in there this weekend. I am usually more than generous but got a few things going on this winter. |

That is cool.Give what you can when you can.If everyone put just a quarter in every kettle they passed the Army would have no trouble doing its work. I did some good this week.I did Santa for a Senior,Toys for tots and Angel Tree.Went in on last Friday to get my Kettle assignment for the day.Got in the van to be taken out and as we where in the process we got into an accident.Light changed, hit the brakes and we slid right through the intersection and into this lady.I was in the front passenger seat>Had airbag deploy and wow was that scary.Iff you never been in that situation, they use gunpowder to set off the airbag so we had a ton of smoke and all I could think of was fire, oh lord I am going to burn up. |

One of the highlights of the week for my kids is taking them grocery shopping on Saturday, we hit Dunkin' donuts first (mommy doesn't know) and they take the change and put it in the Salvation Army kettle at the local equivalent of the Jewels. If they were asked to ring the bell, let's just say I don't think I would need to get them another Christmas present. Good on you Chas, for everything in this story. |

I think what is lost on us sometimes is that kids are that kids, not little adults.I know I am not a parent but that is what I see from doing this. |

I recently rewatched it and I never realized how many old Chicago landmarks are in that movie. Running Scared with Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal is another movie like that. |

It happened again.I was at the mall outside this time.Near the end of the night ,three siblings. Two girls and a boy after they initially rang the bell went inside then came back out and took the bell from me.They stayed outside with me for about 30 min.Opening the doors for people greeting them with a Merry Christmas, thanking them for their donations and being goofy kids. They where 2nd and 3rd graders. The boy even told me I could go take a break he would take care of ringing the bell and watch the kettle, lol. My boss drives up to pick it up at the end of the night and he is like what is with you.I was like they volunteered to help me out instead of being inside and playing so who am I to turn down help that works for free.I am in such a good cheerful Holiday mood right now.I am really glad I am doing this,I will defiantly be doing every year from now on for as long as I can. |
