In the old days if you weren't sure if you were exchanging with someone and you were having a hard time reaching them to straighten them out you were in a quandry as to what to do. You don't want to bring something and make them uncomfortable if they don't have something for you and vice versa.

Now we have the wonderful gift card solution. You get a gift card for said person for a place you both enjoy. IF they don't bring anything you use it yourself and if they do you're covered.

Also you can have a few just in case you have an unexpected guest or such. A place most people shop at you enjoy yourself.

Why not just drop someone a $50? The gift card puts a restriction on the gift. Or even an AMEX gift cert

The only people who give gift cards are terrorists and cop rapists.

cgs, I'm being completely serious here. You seem to lack the perspective of what the holiday season is all about. From your post, it appears that you are of the belief that if you give a gift to someone, you expect one in return. If that is how you and your friends operate, then I really feel bad for you.

gift cards are for pussies. if you don't know enough about someone to know even something basic that they might enjoy- like coffee for example- then you shouldn't be buying them a present period.

I think that's completely unfair to say.

How so? it's just a thoughtless gift. i'm not saying the person might not appreciate or like it- hell my Dad just gives me cash, that's fine with me. Would I rather he picked out something for me? Kinda. To me it's just so lazy. Oh Wal Mart, yeah, here's 25$ to shop there. Or Best Buy. What a wonderful gift. it tells me you have no clue about the person you're buying for so you're copping out.

I've been saving for a new guitar for years. I am happy as shit when my steps and inlaws get me Guitar center gift certificates because it means I'm getting closer to my Les Paul. Been collecting Gift Certificates for a while now. They all know I need music equipment, but sometimes getting someone what they really want means you can't exactly go get it.

Correct.

Not that I get gifts, but if a person knew I liked books but didn't necessarily know what kind of book to get me, I'd rather they just got me a Borders or Barnes & Noble gift cert.

Here's the worst ones....Getting gift card to say Target....I'm likely to use this to go pick up groceries than something for myself....so you basically bought me toilet paper and kleenex.

exactly. i'm not against it in all circumstances....like Darkside's- the fact that someone would get you that at least shows they know something about what you like or want. something specific- like a store that only sells guitars or a record store- ok. But HV's scenario is more what i'm referring to

I sit firmly in the pro-gift card camp. Recognizing that I have very specific, unusual, and sometimes incomprehensible (to others) tastes, it is almost impossible to buy the right gift for me. I think it's nice when people find out what stores I like (Seminary Co-OP, Powell's, etc.) and get me gift cards from those places.

I love gift cards. Especially to restaurants and fast food joints.

Best Buy, Target, Walmart....whatever. I never really shop for myself so it gives me motivation to guy buy something nice for myself.

This is my thinking. I am finally getting new golf clubs after years of waiting. Those

I disagree with bagels. I'd rather get a gift card than most thing speople buy for me. Therefore, I assume that other people would want to get them also.
