Bill O’Reilly defends Ellen DeGeneres in One Million Moms, J.C. Penney controversy

By Marc Snetiker

In a surprising move for the conventional Fox News pundit, Bill O’Reilly came to the rescue of Ellen DeGeneres, who is currently facing heat from conservative groups over her recent partnership with J.C. Penney.

On a segment on last night’s The O’Reilly Factor,O’Reilly took issue with One Million Moms, the group organizing a boycott against the retailer in an effort to force DeGeneres to step down as spokeswoman. Fox News contributor and One Million Moms supporter Sandy Rios explained, “It isn’t about Ellen DeGeneres, but it’s about mainstreaming something that is not acceptable to Christian and traditional family people.”

“But it is about Ellen DeGeneres, and this is where we run into a problem,” said O’Reilly, coming to the defense of the openly gay talk show host, who has responded to the controversy herself. “If you remember with the McCarthy era of the 1950s, they were trying to hunt down communist sympathizers and not let them work and put them on a blacklist… What is the difference between the McCarthy era communist blacklist in the ‘50s and the Million Moms saying, ‘Hey, J.C. Penney and all you other stores, don’t you hire any gay people. Don’t you dare.’ What is the difference?”

Rios asserted that the problem lies with DeGeneres’ personal choice to “act out her lesbian lifestyle and marry her partner, and what that represents.”

O’Reilly, an unlikely champion for DeGeneres, responded, “The essential question is that a conservative group in this country is asking a private company to fire an American citizen based upon her lifestyle. I don’t think that’s correct.”

He added: “I don’t have any problem with you, Sandy, or any of the Million Moms not shopping at J.C. Penney. You don’t want to shop there because you don’t believe the message that they’re sending by hiring Ellen is a good message, more power to you. That is your decision and your right as an American. But to come out and demand the woman be fired, that’s wrong.”

While Rios countered with her right to express an opinion, O’Reilly drew a comparison to his own precarious position, referring to liberal Fox News viewers who constantly demand he relinquish his job because of his differing values: “They have a right, but they’re wrong to do it.”

O’Reilly concluded that despite the right to opinion and choice in where Americans want to take their business, the demand that J.C. Penney “fire a spokesperson who has done nothing legally wrong” was against the “spirit of America.”

“This J.C. Penney thing is a witchhunt and it shouldn’t happen.”

Sometimes I agree with O'Reilly, sometimes I don't, but one thing I'm pretty sure about is that all my liberal friends seem to be under the impression that he's some kind of arch conservative and nothing could really be further from the truth. Maybe it's the fact that he's on Fox. I'm pretty sure Bill O'Reilly is about as average and moderate as an American can be. I've often read that most of America is moderate leaning ever so slightly to the right. Well, that's O'Reilly's TV persona right there. That's probably why his show is so popular.

Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer too, but he often comes off as a right-wing nutjob. O'Reilly generally comes off as a reasonable person. Even though he likes to talk over people.

no, o'reilly usually comes off as a loudmouth prick. and rush limbaugh made his living off of being a right wing nut job. o'reilly was an entertainment news anchor who got into fox news and notes himself as an "independent" but typically has a right-leaning attitude on his show.

Ever so slightly right leaning. Whether you think he's just a persona for television or a real person, O'Reilly's views can't generally be called conservative. He's a loudmouth, yeah, he gets paid to blather on and on, but I'm not sure why you'd call him a prick. I think he comes across as fairly likable on his show. Maybe he's the biggest prick in the world in real life, but I wouldn't know.

It was a huge softball for him. He likes to claim that he's fair and he can now point to hitting this softball as proof.

Do you think he was on the right side of it? I'm sure you do. But instead of calling him fair and reasonable, you're using the occasion of him agreeing with you to bash him for other unspecified views. It seems to me like you're being unfair.

Do you consider Jon Stewart, Keith Olbermann, and Rachel Maddow condescending assholes? When I listen to them I feel much more condescended to than I ever do listening to O'Reilly.

I've never listened to Rachael Maddow.

John Stewart is Jewish. Of course he's condescending.

JORR, I caught the segment in question, and I thought he was very fair. I agree with your general opinion about O'Reilly. He is pretty even handed in a polarized world, but he is annoying in the way he handles his guests.

My main problem with these news channels is that they are extremely politicized. If you watch MSNBC and Fox, you'd get completely different sets of news. I have resorted to mainly watching PBS (nightly news report and Chicago Tonight). I go to Fox for election results, but I cringe in doing so. Even though I am a Republican voter, I cannot stand Rush and Hannity. They are unable to look objectively at any issue and often don't care what is best for this country. I am convinced they would oppose anything Obama stands for even if Obama were to adopt their positions.

I know we get into politics on a lot of these boards. For JORR and Hova, have you guys read the press on the new book, Coming Apart by Charles Murray? I downloaded it on iBooks and am about 25% of the way through it. The stats and theories in the book are pretty interesting.

Here's the problem with the whole debate- if you are conservative and firm in your beliefs, then you're a right wing lunatic. If you're a liberal and firm in your beliefs then your a left wing nut job. It seems to me that this country stands for freedom of expression and should respect differences of opinion. And I still don't get how folks can't look objectively at an issue and decide in each case which way is the best course of action. That is my problem with the whole the national political debate. For example, Congress is fighting over the payroll tax cut, which has become a joke. In the meantime, we are running trillion plus deficits with no end in sight. Aren't we missing the big picture?

Even a broken clock is right 2 times a day. In comparison to nearly everyone else at Fox he sounds reasonable. It comes from his delivery. In reality he's mastered the art of sounding reasonable while being an extremist condescending douchebag.

Jorr, I am getting a little disillusioned with the ability of people to even discuss this stuff. Your point on O'Reilly is right on. I can take or leave him but that doesn't matter. Most of America is moderate but both side at either extreme do most of the loud voicing of their agendas. There is in fact a slantor trend to shout down any remotely conservative thought by the far left. Just my two cents.
