17-year-old West Liberty-Salem High School junior, Megan Vogel, was in last place in the 3,200-meter run as she caught up to Arlington High School sophomore Arden McMath, whose body was giving out. Instead of zipping past McMath to avoid the last-place finish, Vogel put McMath's arm around her shoulders, half-dragging and half-carrying her about 30 meters to the finish line. And then pushed her across the line in front of her. http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/us/201 ... -last.wdtn |

Saw this a few days ago. Good sportsmanship. They both technically should have been disqualified and the fact that she let the other girl finish ahead of her is pretty cool. Maybe the youth out there aren't all fuckups. |

It's a nice story, but it should be noted that the girl had already won a state title earlier in the day and was about to come in dead last in this race by a wide margin. So she wasn't sacrificing anything to stop and help. Still nice that she did. But I think the story is being blown out of proportion. |

I would have given her the Mike Barnes treatment. |

But she could have just run past the hurting girl and not come in last. And it's not just that she helped her, it's that she conciously thought, in the spur of the moment, to make sure the girl she helped finished ahead of her. That deserves a shoutout. |

I'm not saying it wasn't nice and good sportsmanship. I just think that, in general terms, the heat of competition was no longer there, so it made it an easy choice. Had they actually been competing for a medal at that point in the race, I think things would have been much different. It's the people who actually give up something to do things for other people when they are in need that makes a national story. Not this, which was nice, but not that incredible. |
