Holy shit, but an Illinois politician talking intelligent!

“We cant be so naive to believe that just taxing the rich will solve our problems,” said Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate. “Put everything on the table. Repeat. Everything on the table.”

Everything on the table, meaning, tax everyone, not just the rich.
Not shoutout worthy. Douchebag worthy.

Clearly you didn't read the article. Durbin was saying everything including cutting back on entitlement programs. Definitely a shoutout worthy comment.

Dang dude, you really believe that he wants to cut back on entitlements? Minus the bullshit property tax crap he pulls for profit, that's his bread and butter.

Why is that db worthy?

Why is it db worthy to increase tax burden on everyone in illinois when they increased the tax burden on us all to the extent of 150% and it solved absolutely nothing two years ago? Hmmm... tough call.

We're in the middle of a terrible local economy. No one has money in IL. Job creation is awful. Raise tax burden? I don't see that as a viable option. When "receipts" increase, they look for ways to spend it rather than decreasing debt burden, which in my personal opnion is counterintuitive.

What's the estimate of people that don't pay taxes and level of income?

I don't really think there is a right answer, it's just fucked. What do you think they should do?

Yeah I think you are right.

Last Sunday there was something in the paper that stated 401k savings the mean for 35 or 40 years olds was something like 40K and the median was maybe 18K. I told my husband they are going to come for that someday and we should spend ours now.

The way we are going I can take you out for penny beer night and well drinks or 5 buckets of domestic light beer. No food afterwards.

Seconded.

Sounds like he understands that both sides are going to have to share in the pain of getting this problem solved. That's a lot better than where we were sitting pre election.

On paper that sounds great but like Sir Darkness said, these assholes just find a way to spend the savings / increased revenue rather than put it towards knocking down the debt . Its a bit meatballish but theres no fucking way the schools should be in the mess they are considering that the profits from the lottery was supposed to exclusively benefit the school system . Fuckers found a way to get their grimy fucking paws on that and use it for their personal slush fund.

I anger my teacher sister-in-law every time I say this, but the state must eliminate taxpayer-subsidized pensions. They are unsustainable and we simply cannot afford them. Private-sector employees have to plan and save for their own retirements; public employees should too.

Since you bring up the lottery, it sounds like you are complaining about the state. I'm not arguing that point.

I'd rather have a guy say he is willing to be open minded and deal, even if he may wind up being full of shit in the end, than have a guy who straight up says "no fucking way, it's my way or the highway"...but that's just me.

Could they setup some sort of 401k system like a company would?

Not sure how to makethat work but I'm all for limits on earnings while drawing a pension.

I'm cool with that.

A long as they give me the 15 years worth of $$$ that they were supposed to be saving all of these years I've been working so I can just take that $$$ and invest it myself like you are saying.

edit: plus the interest, of course.

Public employees don't get/contribute to social security like private sector workers do.

That would be what would need to be done. Make a cut off point of 5-10 years, pay those people back the money they have paid in plus interest based on the stock market during their tenure and start providing 401K. The rest will get their pensions paid for - business as usual.

Social security is a dead system just like public pensions. It will need to be reformed in kind.

That's my take on it as well. "Entitlement" get's thrown around like a dirty word. But at least on the SS side, each and every one of us that has paid SS taxes in their life is ENTITLED to that money because we have already paid into the program. It's not like some government piggy bank that we get to tap into when we turn 65 just for being good human beings. We've been paying into it our entire working life.

If you want to get rid of SS. Fine. Then I want every damn dime that I've put into the SS program so that I can invest it in my retirement as I see fit.
