Like I said in the other thread, good speech that will be meaningless without actual followup.

Question: Who were you looking to clarify that for? This is a forum - inherently it is going to be full of opinions. Do you feel as if the others who were about to read this thread weren't intelligent enough to figure this out for themselves. Why do you think Darkside is stupid?

I don't feel any guilt over my personal beliefs about the legality of guns. I don't think many people on either side of the issue do, except Nas.

How does that feel?

I wouldn't say I'm ignoring what happened. I'm saying that I'm not in favor of banning all guns because of what happened. That's an emotional knee jerk reaction that I'm not going to engage in. Don Tiny correctly compared it to our blind acceptance of The Patriot Act. We often give our government much more power than they deserve to have because of fear. They know this and are good at making us feel scared. What happened was a tragedy, and it's not going to be the last time it happens, regardless of what legislation is passed following this mass murder. That's hard to accept, but I don't think guns themselves are as big an issue as mental illness and out inadequate treatment of it from an institutional and societal standpoint. The media and media consumers in their country should share just as much guilt as any NRA member for making these murderers famous and guaranteeing fame to potential future psychopaths. There's obviously several complex, intertwining social factors and causes that have produced so many of these public shootings recently and everybody wants to be naive enough to convince themselves that if we hand over just a little bit more of our freedom to the government that everything will be alright. Sorry, I'm not gonna do it.

How o? i believe in freedom. Even though I am a Christian I think a woman should have a right to what goes on in her body, except when it is murder(third trimester),why not take it to full term then put the baby up for adoption I mean we have the safe haven laws?
I am pro pot? It really hurts no one ,gateway drug? No more than booze.
I am for the freedoms we have as outlined in the Constitution. Please tell me where I am for suppressing freedom?
God,I know it is hard for some of you to say it, gave us one gift he gave none of his other creations, freewill. We have the ultimate choice of denying his existence. None of his other creations has that ability. The angels who have abilities far beyond ours do not only us. Mock me put me down for it but we need to be more compassionate and oving to e We need to see that someone is going to go off the deep end and reach out to help or even to stop them instead of turning a blind eye to it and thinking it is not our duty to help. How many of us do we see the lost and downtrodden on the streets and just walk past never even thinking to help only to look on them with disgust? Go ahead mock me for doing what Christ has told me in the Gospels to do. Sure I get paid to ring that bell but most of it goes to those who need the help that is not coming from the government anymore. They told the private people and orgs that they would look after those in need ,yet they do not. They cut the money for those here who need and instead do frivolous things with it. Chus mock me it shows how shallow your soul is, McNown ridicule me,I still will show up every Tuesday and do what God lets me do,I work the food pantry,My pastor even chided others when he said I do what I say and I am the only one in the congregation that does that. Guns ar not the problem it is our outlook on life and how we live.

Darkside answered that very question rather thoughtfully in the DB thread.

I don't agree with him, but his reasoning was sound.

What is not dumb to think is that we are able to reduce the amount of victims that are affected by acts such as this one. We can, as a country, reduce the amount of shootings like this. It is possible.

Would you give up your guns if you knew it would save a life?

I don't own any guns. No, I would not give up my right to own a gun.

Accessory to a murder.

Then so is everybody who voted for Obama. That's just stupid, unproductive trolling.

I am heartbroken, but these things happen. Taking our guns will only embolden criminals to attack more. Why? They will know we will not have the firepower to defend ourselves. I am purchasing guns for my boys for Christmas because I want them to be prepared to protect our rights. #Truth

You are actively stating that you view your "right" (hopefully one soon rescinded) to go to a shooting range and fuck around is worth more than the countless innocent lives lost by the ease of obtaining a firearm legally and then using it to kill folks. You hold yourself in very high regard, it seems. We can't all be important as you.

I can't tell if you are being purposely obtuse or genuinely naive. You should know better than to think prohibiting something ceases it from existing. And you're also clearly misunderstanding the issue, as this has nothing to do with me at all. But feel free to continue handing over any and all type of liberty granted to you in exchange for the illusion of safety.

The mother of the shooter owned many guns. She was still attacked.

I hope your sons won't be too upset when they have to give those guns up. Or will your family go down fighting against the terrible American totalitarian government?

We will not allow anyone to take away our rights as Americans. #Truth

FWIW, here is Darkside's answer to the question.

Darkside wrote:
I'll say it like this. No freedom is free. Millions of lives have already been given to ensure all our freedoms. This isn't some "Obama's takin our freedoms" post. It's the fact. And the thing is, to preserve freedoms, lives still must be given. We don't own these freedoms. We barely lease them. Some people think it's bought and paid for. Our freedoms aren't ours by divine rights, they're ours because we pay for them each day.
No, I wouldn't support repeal of the constitution for the benefit of saving any number of lives. Not the 2nd ammendment, not the 1st, not the 4th or the 5th or any other for that matter. Because these freedoms still everyday need to be paid for. It's not always someone paying the price who chooses to. Sometimes it's someone who chose to put their ass on the line like an enlisted soldier, sometimes, it's a drafted soldier. Sometimes its' someone who had no choice, someone who was murdered (like King) or someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
But your question is invalid because of the extreme hyperbole. There's no way one could ever quantify the price of the submission of our freedoms.
The constitution isn't perfect. And it's not guaranteed. We still have to fight for what we have. Lots of people really don't understand it. They take their freedoms for granted. Like something they were given by birthright. But we still have to earn them. We still ahve to fight for them. Therefore, there will always be casualties.
Its the price we pay to have what we have. I don't like it. no one would. But it's what we must do.

Obama's speech tonight was one of his best. It's a shame that something like this has to happen in order for him to do it.

I can right now without leaving my house build a bomb blow you to fucking kingdom come and not look you in the eye when I do it. Far more easier than putting a gun to your head an pulling the trigger.

I would still like to know how the possesion of gun makes one feel safer in their household.
What happens when an intruder enters the house? Do you have time to get to your weapon? If it's locked away, is there time to retrieve it. If it's in a drawer or some easy-access are, will it still be there.
Also, does this easy access give family members a better opportunity to misuse the weapon?
