Plainfield police have identified the man who was found in his car early Monday morning submerged in Lily Cache Creek near U.S. Route 30.
George Weathered, 30, of Joliet was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters from the Plainfield Fire Protection District pulled him out of the car, a silver Mercedes, which was upside down in the water next to an industrial park, Plainfield Sgt. Mike Fisher said on Tuesday.
Police are still investigating the circumstances that caused the accident while awaiting toxicology reports from the Will County coroner’s office, Fisher said. “All we know at this point is that he might have been coming out of the industrial area, which has a very steep entrance road that borders the creek.” Icy conditions at the time may have contributed to the accident, Fisher added.
Police received a call shortly after 7 a.m. from a person who spotted the vehicle in the water about 100 yards south of a bridge that extends over the creek in the 16300 block of Route 30, police said. The car, which had ice around it, appeared to have been in the water for a long period of time.
Weathered is listed as a sexual predator on the Illinois Sex Offender website for selling child pornography. He was convicted in June of 2008 and was required to register with the Kane County police every year since, according to information provided on the website.
