SOLID nomination.

Thanks, KS and Hatch. KS: I'm afraid if I get into any more subjects I'll further expose myself as the dim-witted, sports charlatan that I am.

Walt - While I think the separate thread is unnecessary, you are right to call me out on my mix-up. I don't know if you were following the thread in which I made that comment, but the context was academic - not sports. Of course, it doesn't make a difference because Duke is an ACC institution either way, but in terms of perception many prospective students wonder if Duke shares the elite academic status that actual ivy league schools have. You can see this summary for a quick example: http://www.ivy-league-online.com/duke-u ... ue-school/ or this excerpt from the ivy league wikipedia entry:

Quote:
The term "Ivy Plus" is sometimes used to refer to the Ancient Eight plus several other schools for purposes of alumni associations,[89][90] university affiliations,[90][91][92][93] or endowment comparisons.[94][95][96][97] In his book Untangling the Ivy League, Zawel writes, "The inclusion of non-Ivy League schools under this term is commonplace for some schools and extremely rare for others. Among these other schools, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University are almost always included. The University of Chicago and Duke University are often included as well."[90]

In any case, you're right on this one. Walt: 1 Vega/Vegan: 0

I was also wondering if you wanted to respond to some clarifications some of us asked of you in another thread about your top 25 NBA players of all time. If I remember correctly, you said Olajuwon wouldn't make your top 25 list and would be beaten out by guys like Ewing and Stockton. Do you want to elaborate on how a guy who finished in the top ten all time in blocks, steals, rebounding, and scoring doesn't make your top 25? And even if you find 25 better, how would you defend the inclusion of Ewing and Stockton in that list over Olajuwon?

Top 20 player. Top 10 point guard.

He's pretty much the Tesla of the NBA.

I can see Stockton in the top 25, but at the expense of Olajuwon?

Olajuwon is the all-time leader in blocks; the next best shot-blockers is more than 600 away, and the next best active player (Duncan) is over 1,200 behind. There's no one close. On top of that, he's a two-time champion and has a MVP award. Stockton is great, but he doesn't match those accolades. Olajuwon was an undisputed franchise player at the time. For all of Stockton's merits, he did not dominate the game from the PG spot like Olajuwon did as a center.

9. Moses
10. Parish

A top 25 NBA player list without Hakeem would be like making a list of the top 25 QBs ever and leaving off Tom Brady.

I hope those aren't Vegan's thoughts because I like him. However anyone that ranks Ewing ahead of Hakeem or doesn't have Stockton as the 2nd best PG in NBA history shouldn't be allowed to talk basketball.

Nope, I don't have Ewing ahead of Olajuwon. I think Stockton is one of the best PGs of all time, but I don't have him ahead of Olajuwon on an all time top 25 list. Stockton and Ewing ahead of Olajuwon has been forwarded by Walt in a different thread, and I brought that up here to get his thoughts.

I'd go with Jason Kidd, circa 1998-2003.

Stockton is the best pure PG in NBA history and clearly the best defensive. Isiah was a great scoring guard in an undersized backcourt. Big O was REALLY a SG.

Please take a look a Stockton's numbers. You and FF are either ill or purposely trying to drive me crazy.

Saying Stockton was a better defender than GP is worse than any basketball thought I could ever concoct.

Of PG's? Yes. He was too undersized to guard SG. Who will break his steals record?

Getting steals is not necessarily a good indicator of defensive ability. Look at Iverson. There's a reason GP shut down Stockton in the playoffs but Stockton was incapable of returning the favor.
