My gf called me about a week or two ago because she was in a parking spot and could not get out without possibly knocking down the motorcycle that was next to her. After some twists and turns, she made it out ok.

I havent looked at the legality. If its not illegal, it should be.

Im sure blocking people in violates some law

I'm sure there is some law somewhere that says only one vehicle per parking spot.

Don't bother. It isn't. Same goes for cars/trucks/SUVs/minivans that block people in.

It also isn't illegal to tap into them to get out.

It is certainly illegal to block someone in on a city street. Motorcycles included.

Maybe you and Boilermaker Rick can get together and decide whether or not it is illegal.

Double parked??? Not sure what you are even talking about at this point. Asked you once already already to describe how the scooter was illegally parked.

Yes, double parked.

It was horizontal in front of me on the street on the edge of the parking space I was in.

It was the only space where doing this kind of parking blocks someone in because its on the end.

Anyway, I dont care if its a bike or a car, just dont block me in.

"Double parked" has multiple meanings, which is why I asked (and why RFDC made the Seinfeld reference  ).

Was this a defined parking space in Chicago or was it the meter-at-the-middle-of-the-block type deal?

If I had the message board tenacity of say Boilermaker Rick, I would ask you if it should still be illegal to "block someone in" and how that would be defined?

Since we're talking about parking, I guess you mean the curb. I think so, but I see cars doing it once in a while.

It's a defined space on a downtown city street.

Well, if it's illegal as you say it is, tell Johnny Law and see what he does. Or call spmack next time and he can talk you through it.

Next time Ill just knock it over.

I manuvered around it, but I have the same philosophy for cars. If you make it so that I have to hit your vehicle to get out, your vehicle is getting hit.

Really can't say I blame you. I've had my bike knocked over by microburst winds and a neighbor who drives like Elaine Benes, so I'm fairly judicious where I park my bike. I scratch my head at the scooters and bikes I see parked right up against a car, but it's not all that different that the cars that pull the same behavior. The worst (or best, depending on what side your on) are the people that do it with new and/or expensive bikes.

Yeah, it wasnt a big thing. It took an extra 30 seconds. But it was like, there are 4 spots behind me that have room on each end. Im the one on the end with the least room. It was like he was being inconsiderate on top of already bending the rules.

Post subject:  Re: People who knock over illegally parked motorcycles

As someone who's had there bike knocked over by a car backing into it, I will generally try to park in front of the car on the end because it's less likely to be hit. I NEVER park behind something like an SUV because that's just asking for it. Again, I'm more judicious than most motorcyclists in the city when it comes to parking, but that might help explain why the bike was parked in front of you vs the other spaces.
