Most everyone I get in contact with favors this and a flat tax or sales/VAT tax. Do you really think the government would give up all that control they have over us with the IRS though? |

Not just the government but the lobbying/corporate influence sectors would lose a lot of their power over Congress and such. They won't give that up without a fight, especially since they are winning the current one. |

Don't discount the Justice Department, who uses the IRS as a tool when it investigates people in matters unrelated to tax evasion in order to throw on additional charges, find something that will stick in a case they ordinarily could not make or squeeze people even tighter to "cooperate". |

Plus, the flat tax is, and always will be, a terrible idea. |

I'm not a huge proponent of the flat tax, I would find it preferable to have there be a flat tax up to a certain amount of income and then the rate rises after that threshold is met. Roll capital gains into it as well. |

What I'm saying is that it should be flat up to a point and then there is another bracket or two above that. Cut out most tax breaks/credits etc and roll capital gains into the income tax. So I guess I'm saying that it shouldn't be a simple flat tax but more like a incredibly simple tax. |

I support both a personal & corporate flat tax system. Simple & no loopholes. Abolish the IRS. |

Don't you kind of have to have an IRS, though? I mean, even if you're just paying a flat tax, who processes the paperwork? Your DMV? |

I'd be ok with that. If I could lie about my income like I do my height and weight that would be great. |

That's the thing, you would still have some sort of tax department but it would be a fraction of the size. I wouldn't totally eliminate it, you couldn't. |

Well of course but without the deductions, refunds, credits and other garbage all you need are simple clerks and computers. Best advantage mentioned is no more favors for buddies of pols and all the games to reduce your income. You make it you pay ??% upfront and never see it again. |

That's what I meant, you still have that revenue department but it's tiny. Vastly simplified tax structure means it's harder to cheat and easier to catch evaders. All this = less manpower needed. It also strips said department of all political powers. |
