I love this guy. He's like Hawk but on the field Cooper On Managing Cubs: ‘They Could Do A Lot Worse’ October 1, 2013 9:56 AM (WSCR) After the firing of Dale Sveum on Monday, rumors are beginning to circulate on who will be the Cubs next manager. Tuesday morning on The Mully and Hanley Show, an interesting candidate threw his name in the ring. When asked if he’d be interested in the job, White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper didn’t shut the idea down completely. “You know what,” Cooper said, “they can do a lot worse.” “I said it before, pitching is my passion, but I know, I believe in my heart that I can run a team. If I have the right people around me, I believe I can do it. That’s not what I’m searching for. I’m searching for the pitching department, searching for us to be good enough to win another championship. We were blessed enough in ’05, that’s a while ago I know, but that’s the goal every year, to get into the playoffs and hopefully win a world championship. I’m very satisfied in doing what I’m doing. |

Just because Coop is an insufferable assbag on the radio doesn't necessarily mean he would not be a good manager. I think he's been a damn successful pitching coach. |

I think that would be along the same lines of the KC Chiefs hiring Gunther Cunningham to be their head coach a few years back. Gunther was an odd duck that was very good at running a defense and most of the fans loved his off the cuff strange comments in the media. Yet when he was a head coach it was clear he was in over his head and he needed to return to his area of expertise. I like Coop and he does a darn good job as a pitching coach but I think he would be in over his head as a manager. |

After the Cubs fans shamed World Series caliber managers in Dusty Baker and Lou Pinella I think Coop would be hesitant to get paid to eventually be hated. |

vodka coop lol /<UMN RFDC, I think its a lot different being a head coach of an NFL team than being an MLB manager. I think its very easy for an assistant coach or coordinator to get in way over his head as a head coach. I think that would be very unlikely for a guy who has been around as long as Coop has should he be given the chance to manage. |

Maybe so Frank. I would take him right now over Ventura. |

Don Cooper was interim manager for the last two games after Ozzie bolted early. That's the kind of major-league leadership Theo prioritizes. |

So the Cubs want a guy who could develop hitters,I would think. I would have kept Sveum. If they don't get Girardi, what was the point? |

Jimmy, Dale Sveum was hired as a 2 year Manager while the Cubs wait for Girardis contract to expire next Month. I'm pretty sure this was Theo's plan from day 1. Joe is coming home. |

Coop was the kind of guy they should have hired two years ago, a steward of the position who would be the face of the team until developing players made it to the majors. He would be good for a sound bite every day, a few blow ups during the season and would defend his players to the outside world. Now, they need a different type of manager. They need one with patience who is a teacher at heart. I, too, would take Coop over Ventura, but I don't want Coop. |

The way that guys are hired in sports is no different than in business. Tampering goes on all the time. Guys are networked & know each other & talk, even if they aren't supposed to. |

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. Same. The only question on any Cubs fan's mind was if Sveum was going to be here for 2 or 3 years. No one ever saw him as "the guy." Not on this board, not the media - no one. Girardi is a logical candidate...though I think Theo originally preferred Francona over a Sveum -> Girardi situation. Perhaps you or Seacrest can explain this to Frank. Maybe not... |

by the way, this is Coop posturing for the White Sox job. He has a history of undermining the manager once he sees the tides turning. |

So, Scorehead, you are saying that Theo's plan all along was to pay a manager 3 years of salary for only 2 years worth of work? Oh and on top of that, nobody really knows what Girardi is doing to do. I would say he is just as likely to stay in New York as he is to come to the Cubs. So what would his plan be then? |

Even he gives him two years, the speculation is rampant that he is not the guy for the long haul. Think about it, Epstein would have to be really stupid to hire for that job without a scenario for Plan B. Lesson #1 for business: If you have a problem that money will solve, and you have the money, then you don't really have a problem. |
