Ok, it's about that time for the rest of you casual sports fans to pay attention NIU football again! I guess we still need Fresno St to lose for us to get to a big bowl game under the rules that the Big 10 set up ( ), but I gotta be honest, I don't know why. Fresno has not been more impressive this year. And they definitely weren't more impressive in the bowl season last year (I am BEGGING Irish Boy's know-it-all ass to respond on that) - and that's essentially what NIU is being "dinged" on - losing to Florida State last year, coaches are voting them down. They couldn't vote them out last year, so they are over-correcting this year. Fresno lost by 40+ to SMU last year in a bowl game. Right. |

Yes Purdue is a BigTen team, but that's not worth points. You will finish the year undefeated without playing anyone because you are in the MAC. You should get a decent bowl game. What are you legitimately hoping for? |

And in a real conference, the Illini suck. |

spanky actually has a point here. It's easy to hate on NIU's schedule and the cupcakes they scheduled out of conference but Fresno seems to be getting more credit than deserved for beating Boise State because of the Boise State name rather than the actual strength of the team. Really though, NIU should be mad at the pathetic job most of the MAC is doing now. They are the best MAC team probably ever. However, the conference as a whole is garbage and it hurts NIU to really have no way of showing how good they are. |

I look forward to the arguments for the next month about which school should get to play in an exhibition game in January. |

Thankfully we don't have the four team tournament yet or we'd have to sit through 8 months of "How could you not let an undefeated team in!?!?" talk. From a very small amount of people. |

And despite what you think, anyone would chose being the 16 seed in a national tournament over playing an exhibition at the Rose bowl if given the choice. |

Honestly, I don't think the mid-majors should even be allowed to play against the big conferences. They should be two separate divisions. It's just that we go through this every year when some scrappy upstart tries to sit at the big kids' table and everyone gets so fucking indignant. How is that even fun for anyone? We should just be able to say NIU is the best football program in the country among programs that aren't nauseatingly huge business concerns, and then that's that. Besides, all going to the Orange Bowl really did for the university was fuck up their finances because of all the tickets they were guaranteed to buy. |

Good. That's what's best for everyone. Northern Illinois isn't really playing the same game as Iowa, which I get makes it fun when they win, but it's like comparing apples and genetically engineered super-apples. |

They'll still play in the regular season, for now. Then, we can finally start paying players $2,000 or $3,000 a month and a new division will be created. They still may end up playing a game in September but they really will be two different entities. |

At that level they are a superpower. The guys playing actual Division 1 rugby look just like D-1 football players. A match between the two would be absurd. And it isn't always the schools you think that play at the higher level. For example, I think Whitewater regularly beats Michigan. But the thing about the club level is that there isn't really much oversight. Sometimes teams show up with guys that don't even attend the school. But my buddy was telling me that one team kept using these ringers so the other clubs voted and told them they could go play with the big guys. |

You said you would rather see Purdue in the Rose bowl the 16th seed in a playoff. Then after realizing no one would be left to play Purdue since everyone else who is good would want to be in a playoff, you sort of changed your stance. Like when you realized you couldn't play defense in golf and then tried to change the argument to their is more strategy involved golf than track which was not the argument. |
