So... roughly 4 years ago, my dad got a flu shot and as a result, got Guillain Barre Syndrome. It's a disease that causes your body's immune system to attack itself and basically paralyzes you from the neck down. He was in ICU for a month, the hospital for a few more, and a nursing home for several more. He was working when he got it and was forced to retire. He was in a wheelchair for about two years and graduated to a cane. He still has to wear braces around his ankles.

So, the good news... earlier this week, he walked without a cane for the first time in 4 years. He also got a settlement through a specialized federal vaccination court that will help for some of the special equipment he will have to have eventually. It also gave him a pain and suffering settlement. It's been a good week for him, and it's good to see because it's been a rough 4 years, and he will continue to struggle for the rest of his life. But I was so thrilled this week, I felt like sharing. He is a tough dude, and he has recovered a lot mentally... this week helped to bolster that even more. He seems more like himself than I can remember since the whole thing happened. It's a great day!

That's great news!

It's sad that flu shots cause this. If the CDC is going to push flu shots so much, they should require testing for GB syndrome at an early age, as well. Reckless not to do so. No one should be paralyzed because of a flu shot.

Yep. The weird part is he got flu shots his whole life and nothing happened. They think it may have been because the year he got the shot, there was a good deal of swine flu in the vaccine since it was prevalent that year. There is a higher occurrence of GB in swine flu vaccines. The national rate of GB that year was higher than it had ever been. Crazy.
