hiram wrote: I am watching this now and I feel that Mr Silver is carrying himself well at this press conference. Decision is BS though. Private convo, recorded illegally. Doesn't matter. NBA doesn't have due process and owners cannot sue the league because all issues must be dealt with in arbitration. Bottom line: however this got out, its out and tarnishes the league. The commissioner has every right, under the owner's constitution, to do this. He's just lucky they don't force him to sell the team by threatening to terminate the franchise. |

I guess his silver plating did not come off, and now he looks like Sterling Silver. |

i just hope the nba remembers this precedent when people start crawling out of the woodwork with recordings of nba players and coaches and other owners saying inappropriate racist things. lifetime ban. everything sterling said is reprehensible and he deserves what he gets, but what about when a real nba moneymaker, a star player perhaps, is recorded saying racist things? lifetime ban, right? |

I don't think you guys appreciate just how much having a racist owner of a franchise impacts the entire league. It would cost the league so much money over the years. Pretty much nothing worse could have been done to impact the league than what Sterling said. Coaches and players saying the same thing would not be a problem because they can be fired and never rehired. You can't do that with owners. This is what you do with owners. |

Discriminating against people trying to rent your property = OK Talking to your girlfriend about racist things = not OK So he was fine and going to get a lifetime achievement award from the NAACP but then they heard him say something racist so they cancel it. He is the same person he always was... The news got out and people had to save face. The whole thing is a perfect example of our faux outrage society we live in. Sterling has been a racist fuck for 3 decades in the NBA, but TMZ got a hold of one recording and the torches and pitchforks come out. |

thats why i think this is a tough precedent to follow. this incident was easy, nobody like this guy even BEFORE all this. what happens if a popular nba figure and member of the "nba family", player, coach or owner, gets baited into unsavory comments that are recorded without his knowledge and are released to the media? again, not defending sterling here, but this case was a easy because the guy is a prick and the nba looks good right now. |

Then they get fired. Lifetime ban not necessary because they could not be hired again by any team because it would be horrible for that team. The only reason this is a lifetime ban is because he owns a team and cannot be "fired". It is not a precedent for all other employees, its a precedent for all other NBA owners. |

at the end of the day could he still technically own the team even though he is banned from all nba activities? it sure sounded like i from what i heard in that press conference. he announced the lifetime ban, and then added they would pursue forcing him to sell. if i were in the nba i would be very cautious about any interviews or who i talk to. it is open season on recording and spilling to TMZ. |

I just hate the point our society has reached when things only matter because deadspin or TMZ has leaked something about it. 3 weeks ago you could have done a 5 second google search and learned all you need to know about Sterling's racism. Suddenly Blake Griffin turns his shirt inside out because of this... No problem with the guy signing your checks for the last several seasons. It's pandering and it's insulting to our intelligence. |

It's kind of an odd exercise to think about applying rules and punishments designed for managers, players, referrees, coaches, etc. to someone (an owner) who operates outside that matrix. That's why I think today's ruling carries a lot of PR bonus points, but really not much else. In the end though I suppose there's not much else you can do to convey rejection of ideas like his except through sort of ceremonial events like this. |

Shoutout is deserving, what would have made it better would have been if he answered the "why didn't you go after him before?" question like this: I don't know, ask the former commissioner. Any chance to make Stern look bad is alright in my book. He hung around 10 years too long. |
